I have had a chronic cough since October 2005 with frequent severe sore throat, face flushing and chest pain which is both in the center of the chest but often radiates to both sides. The coughing is frequently so severe it makes me vomit. I went to my family doctor several times and have had two couse of antibiotics and a prescription of two different puffers. I have had chest x-rays, a bone scan and CT scan. The CT scan showed an abnormality in my left lung so I was referred to a respirologist who performed a broncheoscopy and also noted I have mitral valve prolapse, ankle swelling plus high blood pressure. (diastolic is constantly over 90 often 100.)  He telephoned yesterday and said the brocheoscopy showed nothing and suggested that I get a prescription for heartburn medication from my family doctor. Frankly, I am tired of going to doctors and don't feel like taking any more medicatio or having any more tests for nothing. I am affected at work as I am a teacher and usually end up with a severe coughing fit in the classroom or once I get home. I have so much chest pain I often don't know how I will cope. I am trying to build myself up physically by running doing yoga and walking and swimming but I am so exhausted after any exercise that I end up sleeping for hours. I am tired of this. Does it sound like GERDS?

Yes to me it sounds like GERD. I have all your symptoms but my coughing is not as severe as yours. You should go back to the doctor so he can put you on some PPI's. My doc prescribed prilosec and it has done wonders for me. The pain was so bad it would radiate into my jaw, back and gums. GERD is not a good thing it wrecks havoc not only on your digestive track but your whole entire body gets affected by it.

Take care and please go back to the doc and have him give you something. Left untreated as I am sure you have read can lead to serious conditions. I just found out today my sister was just diagnoset with Barrett's which has completely freaked me out.

Hi tired of coughing, I have allergies and asthma since around 84. It put me on the floor. Schools are dusty and you're exposed to all the kid's infections. What would be smart is to when you get home, remove all your clothing and put on clean stuff. This sounds a lot like asthma to me. Could you see an allergist for the skin test? At least you'll know right away. A good allergist also has a breathing test on site which you blow into and they can find out right away if you have asthma.

I also have high blood pressure.  If you are taking a beta blocker for your pressure, you probably don't have asthma.

I have no choice but to go to a chain store or drive miles for a script.  I do call small stores for info on meds as they are usually better at that.  I agree about going to the doctors all the time.  That's why this forum is great, also the internet.

I have both gerd and asthma and allergies, also allergic to meds and high pressure.

Thanks for the advice, Joan. I appreciate it. That makes sense as I pretty well always have an attack after using chalk in the classroom or erasin g the chalkboards. Oh, we also have five cats in the house along with two dogs. We've hat the cats and one dog who is shorthaired for a long time. The only change is the additionof a long-haired Golden Retriever. Also I have to take better care to control the household dust and animal hair. iI am not taking any medication for high blood pressure. I just resumed yoga and I hope that will increase my lung capacity as well as improving my digestion. I am also cutting out or at least cutting down on carbonated diet soft drinks and caffeine. I find diet coke r really makes me cough,Probably the asparatame. I'm also going to elminate fatty foods from my diet. Good luck to you and take care of yourself.

Hi tired of coughing...I stopped using soda a while back because it has two things, the fizz and the caffeine plus it can give you a sugar rush, too much of a UP all at once for me. I agee about the asparatame, gross taste and aftertaste. Am trying to cool it on that. Since I have the GERD, I need to go ahead and try to cut out caffeine. Must also lose weight. I am a 6 ft tall female and weigh 250. My 'IDEAL' weight is 180 but 219 is good enough for me. I only eat non-fat foods but I have a SWEET TOOTH and that is my primary weight problem. I had no problem giving up fatty foods. I was born before fast foods were popular and frankly I use the McD or the BurgerK for the bathroom and free water. I am super thirsty with this bleeding ulcer (current problem) and beat so I must rest now.

Take care. I really think there are allergies and/or asthma involved with me because last night after walking across tar and long grass and weeds in the rain I had several big time coughing/wheezing fits. I alomost drove off the road, and that was after taking puffers. Have a good rest
