Have a sore throat that just won't quit.  Tried to lower caffeine and not eat at night.  Am taking 20 mg of omeprazole.  It doesn't seem to help.  Am afraid to take a lot of omeprazole because of the side effects.  Also have sinusitis/asthma/allergies which may contribute to my problem.  Had a bravo test and they did find low level reflux.  Also had hemoraghic (spelling?) gastritis which was pretty terrible.  That (the hemmoragphic gastristis) put me in a whole other ballpark.  Have been having this sore throat problem for years.  It is painful and annoying.  Any suggestions?

I am having the same problem.  The Prilosec OTC (20 mgs) relieves most of my symptoms but I still get the throat burn here and there; especially right after I have taken the Prilosec.  I've tried 40 mgs of Nexium and suffered debilitating side effects.  I was in bed all day with diarrhea and nausea and terrible stomach pains - much worse than any heartburn I have ever experienced.  When my throat burns, I take two Tums which really does help but I would rather just take my one pill in the morning.  I am going to try the DGL licorice to see if that helps at all.  I have asked my doc for advice but so far she just wants me to try another 40 mg drug like Protonix.  I don't want to take another 40 mg drug because I'm afraid of getting so sick again.  I have asked her to prescribe me Prevacid in 30 mgs to see how that might work. 

Sorry but even though I can comiserate, I don't have any answers.

Tummytuck, I didn't realize that tums could help with the sore throat.

I strongly suspect it's because my sore throat is actually caused by the acid that is splashing up into it.  When I take the Tums, it neutralizes the acid in my throat - or at least that's my theory.  At this point, I might even be experiencing phantom symptoms.  I'm one of those chronic worriers - when I have nothing to worry about, I worry that there MUST be SOMETHING I should be worrying about! tongue

Joan,

Please try to give up all caffeine products forever. Too much caffeine is what triggered my GERD so it is a no/no if you have any symptoms of GERD. You could get alot worse in the long run. I thought I couldn't give it up but once your body gets used to not having it, you adjust and you feel even better not having it.

Please try.

Hi all, I think I had too much coffee that day. The caffeine opens the spintcher (spelling) muscle I think. Mine is probably from reflux too. I like coffee but not all that pain. Thanks for your good thoughts!

thank you good friends...no more caffeine days for me. think too much caffeine is definitely a big cause of my gerd. Am down to three cups and will try to lower from that. Yes herb teas are great and I like them a lot and think they are an excellent alternative to caffeine.
