Could it be that some of us have been misdiagnosed and that is why the meds don't work?? I am starting to think that I don't have acid reflux, but rather that I am refluxing gastric juices and bile.  That can explain why taking two prevacids a day didn't help me.  Shutting down the acid may have actually made things worse for me.

I feel very bloated all the time and I barely ever produce any bowel movement.  I may have had a condition called gastroparesis (slowness of the stomach to eliminate digested food into the intestines).  I also have a lump in my throat due to refluxing, but I am thinking now that it is not acid that I'm refluxing.

Anyone else here think that maybe they don't have acid reflux but maybe something else causing their symptoms and refluxing/GERD???

I thought you had the test and saw the reflux coming up...am I wrong.

What percentage would you say that the meds are working. You could try not taking the meds and then see what your symptoms are. I know that when I thought my meds weren't working I stopped them for a day or two and I was able to tell that they really are working. They just didn't work perfectly.

I did, indeed, have the barium swallow test and it did indicate that I was refluxing.

But the GI said that since my endoscopy showed that my esophagus is normal I might not have acid reflux??

The GIs are confusing!!!  Why do the barium swallow if you're not going to take it seriously??

I am not taking the medication these days (it's been 3 days). I DO reflux, but maybe it's not ACID.  Maybe the proton pump inhibitors were making me worse, by shutting down the acid needed for digestion.

Or maybe they just weren't working because I have a huge constipation problem which, if it never gets addressed, will continue to cause me to reflux.  FG

It sounds like you need some other tests to confirm what's going on...I know it's so nerve racking to have more tests but something else is going on...how's your lump in the throat now that you're off the meds? Also, is your constipation better now that you're off the meds?

My lump is no worse off the meds than it was while I was on them.

the constipation is getting only a little better, but that's a start.

I'll let you know what the tests show.
