You must eat one hour after taking a PPI.

After talking to my GI's nurse about my Prevacid not working very well, she informed that a person must eat something within one hour after taking a PPI or you will loose 20% of it's effectiveness.  I was waiting sometimes 2 hours before I ate anything.

My prevacid did stop working though and they switched me to Nexium and it's working like a charm now.  I make sure I eat something one hour after taking it.  This would eliminate taking it at night and then going to bed like some of you might be doing.

My doctor said to take Prevacid in the morning and eat something between one half hour and one hour, he said to take Zantac before bed. He said that the 2 drugs do different things and that is why you take them differently. He also told me the same thing about loosing part of the effectiveness. Interesting that you have to ask, wouldn't you think they would tell you right off...

That's interesting to know. I don't think I've ever heard that, but I'll certainly keep it in mind. Thanks for the information. I don't think it's even in the FDA pamphlet that comes with your refill. Maybe this is a new thing that's coming out of a phase IV study or something?

sillilly, glad to see that nexium is working for you! :0)  Is it the first time you're trying it?  Does it eliminate all your symptoms?

Yes, it's the first time taking Nexium.  After trying three other PPI's, the Nexium works the best.  I've been taking it about two weeks now and I don't have any symptoms...I make sure that I eat one hour after taking it. 

I'm so afraid that any day now, it will stop working like all the others.  Of course, the others never worked very good ever.  My GI never told me what his nurse told me.  She found out after going to an educational seminar on PPI's. 

How's it going for you, Friendly, with your tests and all?

sillilly, i'm actually not doing so well.  my throat sometimes feels like it's closing and I get very dehydrates.  I have an appt. with my PCP on Monday and I'm gonna ask her to check my eloctrolyte levels.

about PPIs, a GI doc whom I'm in touch with online told me to take 2 of them 15 minutes before I eat dinner.  I was taking one in the morning and one at night.  Maybe taking 2 at once is more effective for me?
