I have been suffering from GERD symptoms for over 2 years. Its started out as mild heart burn, which my family doctor gave me 10mg of pariet to take as needed. Over the past year my symptoms has gotten from bad to worst, the pariet I was taking stop working so my family doctor sent me to see a GI doctor. The GI doctor tried numerous medication but none worked will, or if they work they lose their effectiveness after a few months eg (nexium 40mg 2 a day) I did a number of test for the GI doctor as well, which include x-ray,endoscope, blood test and a 24hr ph test. The GI doctor said that they all came back normal and that he cant see anything that would cause my GERD symptoms. I saw the GI doctor today and he said that he is going to refer me to see a nose and throat doctor for a second opinion. My question is, what can a nose and throat do for my now?


PS I have tried Naturopathic Medicine eg( DGL, probiotics and acupuncture )

Hello outlaw, and welcome to healingwell. I am sorry you are having problems, but am happy you have found us! Healingwell is a great place to come for support! In order for me to feel comfortable giving you an answer, I would like to know more about what symptoms you are having. If your doctor is saying he doesn't see anything that would be causing you to have GERD symptoms, then maybe there is nothing going on there. Again, I would just feel much better knowing more about your symptoms, if you don't mind. Thanks, and I do hope you post more!

I have a long list of symptoms. When I am on medication no matter what I eat just seem to get regurgitated into my esophagus. When not on meds, meaning when a miss a dose It seems like someone has ramed a stick with fire on it down my throat. I cant play basketball for too long because of chest pain nor can I use the treadmill at my gym.

I have a next question does any of you guys who are on nexium get abnormal vision as a side effect?

HI outlaw...again. I am truly sorry you are going through so much. I would take your doctors advice and go to the next specialist to see what's going on. As for that side effect with Nexium, I have personally never heard of it, and I would suggest you call your doctor and tell him this is going on. It may be an allergic reaction to the drug, or it may be something else going on with you that has nothing to do with the drug. The best thing to do is get medical advice on this one...like I said, I have personally never heard of this reaction to Nexium. Maybe others will be along with their Nexium experiences. So today I went to see the nose and throat doctor, for a second opinion as my GI doctor suggested. When the nose and throat doctor saw what my GI doctor had requested he said to me " this makes no sense to me i am a nose and throat doctor not a GI doctor, you are having GERD symptoms". He then put some kind of tube with a camera through my nose and down my throat, and told me that everything seems fine to him. Then the nose and throat doctor told me that he is going to send me to see a speech therapist ha:-).
I know what I am going through and all I can get from these doctors is medications that don't work and referral that leads me no where. Now I dont know what to do. Any suggestion would be helpful.

Hey outlaw...I am sorry you are having such a frustrating time over there. I am happy you went to the ear, nose, and throat doctor, eventhough you got no news of anything being wrong there, which is actually good...at least you ruled that out. Why does he want you to see a speech therapist? I am sorry if you have answered this before, but does anything help minimize your GERD symptoms? And have you tried all the things I suggest in my one post about minimizing GERD symptoms? I only ask because that may be some way of getting relief, even if it's only temporary. I think I have a suggestion...and I know I have no idea how your insurance is working and such, but can you see another GI for a 2nd opinion? Also, have you been to your family doctor about this? I am just curious what he is thinking about this. Boy sweetie, I am sorry this has been so rough. We will figure out something though. Just do your best to be patient!!! Wishing you all the best!
