Hey there Joe.
I have never heard of this Chiari Malfomation, but of course, did research, as I love to learn new things. You said you friend suggests you may have this, and you are curious about the symptoms...
After much research, here are the most common symptoms I am finding...
Arnold-Chiari malformation is a neurological condition that causes compression of the brainstem and the spinal cord at the base of the skull. Symptoms of Chiari malformation, as it is commonly known, include headache, neck pain, fatigue, swallowing difficulties and numbness and tingling of the extremities. It is diagnosed with a special magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.
I am not seeing much that relates this to GERD symptoms. I see more of like IBS symptoms if anything.
My best suggestion is checking out this website, and of course, talking to your doctor about this. I would personally say you don't have this, but, I have not examined you, and I am not a doctor, so I can't really say for sure. In the following website is a lot of information for you about this disorder.

Give that one a try and let me know how it goes...

The above website also gave me a good amount of information that you might find useful.
Again, I don't feel that this is something you are dealing with, but if it's on your mind, it is best to look into it. You know your body better than anyone.
Please, keep me updated and let me know how things go for you!!!
Wishing you the best always!
