How long does it take from GERD to lead to Barretts and Barretts to lead to cancer? In my research I only found "after a period of time", but I can't find anything that identifies this period of time. I have had GERD ---BAD esph spasms for 8 months almost daily. I am finally going to see a GI on Thurs for a consult. But I have been paranoid that I have progressed to something more serious. I cannot get it off my mind! Feedback appreciated

There is no set timeframe for Barretts to develop. That's why the information you read is vague and says "after a period of time". Sometimes Barretts develops, sometimes it does not. Sometimes Barretts leads to cancer and sometimes it does not. You are not going to find a definite answer because there is none.
If it makes you feel better, I lived with bad esophageal spasms for several years - almost daily - and did not develop Barretts.
Good luck at your appointment on Thursday.

Happilywrapped is right. There is NO specific time frame. And, in some cases, it will never develop. My best advice for you is meet with your GI as scheduled, and don't worry yourself sick over something that probably isn't a problem anyway. Just relax, and try to take it easy. If you worry too much, you are going to start having anxiety problems, and those just aren't pretty. I wish you the best at your appointment!

Thank you guys again for your replies. It sure helps keep me half sane. I know you all can relate. Hopefully I have some good info from the GI on Thurs again.
Thanks again!
