Psoriatic Arthritis, no Psoriasis

I know this is the Psoriasis forum, but I was wondering if someone could help me! I'm 21 years old, no Psoriasis, no family history of Psoriasis. I've had symptoms of swollen/achy/stiff joints since I was 8 years old, but I was never referred to a rheumatologist. I had a flare up aged 8 (wrists) and then 11 (ankles). about 12 months ago I had another flare up, this time in my wrists, shoulders, hips, knees and fingers (MCP and DIP joints). I had a bone scan which showed this joints being inflamed.

I've seen a number of rheumatologists in the past 6 months, the most recent said he thought I had Psoriatic Arthritis. This was a huge shock to me because, like I said, I don't have Psoriasis.

I have read and my GP has said that you can have one episode of Psoriasis and then chronic arthritis or the arthritis can come first and the Psoriasis will follow..

But I just find this so unlikely in my case. When I was researching I though "well I can definitely rule this out because I don't have Psoriasis"... Now I'm worried I'm going to wake up one morning and find I have Psoriasis..

Can anyone offer any reassurance?

I don't have either disease but my heart goes out to you..so young to suffer. My hubbie has both the diseases. The psoratic arthritis went undiagnosed for years until he finally found a compitent MD who tied the psoriasis, which was mis-diagnosed for 15 years as exzema, and all his aches. Someone finally tied the two together. He takes Methotrexate 12 pills per week and I can tell you it has healed everything!! His psorasis was so bad it hurt my hands/feet to look. Deep fissures...dry skin. Please rest assure that his medication healed his hands in months; so, my hope for you is that you do not develop the skin disease but if you do the meds truly help!!

I am anxious to learn about this. My Rhumy is highly suspicious that I have PsA, and I do not and never had psoriasis.
I am on 2 doses of prednisone daily to see if I get favorable results with my inflammation, this is only for a week. Waiting on 2nd round of blood test results.

I am 100% sure I also have fibromyalgia, but from what I read, the symptoms go hand in hand.

Hi Paper: Please check out Lyme disease. It does sound like you might have this scourge as i do and i have both psoriasis and lyme.

Have you looked in to lupus at all? The symptoms you say are how mine started. Sorry about the pain, I know it is hard.

Hi, From what I can tell speaking to other people who suffer from PsA, it is not all that rare to have PsA but no signs of P. I don't think they ( docs ) know why. P could still show up. I was diagnosed with P when I was 37 but not diagnosed with PsA until I was 42 ! I had all the signs and symptoms but the GP's ( most ) have no idea about this stuff.

I have PSA, had p in my scalp for years. It was initially misdiagnosed and then finally properly diagnosed and treated with steroids. I suffered with pain for years before my new rheumy ( I have osteoarthritis and fibro) diagnosed psa. It's like the light bulb went off .. it all made sense. For now I am using mobic only. I am still rather young, and trying to hold off taking the strong stuff until later. I have several conditions to manage, so medications are expensive.
