Another option is to remove part of the joint and reconstruct it using either a tendon graft or an artificial substance. This is known as a ligament reconstruction, or tendon suspension arthroplasty.
The thumb is the workhorse of the hand. It does about half the work of the hand.
Most people have complete range of motion of their hand post-op. It takes about three months to fully recover after surgery. But you will be back in the kitchen baking goodies.
