knee pain

Well got the results of my MRI today. While the x-rays did not show severe arthritis in my knee the MRI findings were severe tricompartmental arthritic changes. I also have a Baker's Cyst. He said it was lower in the knee that they usually are but it was not large enough to be worried about. The MRI findings combined with the pain I am having led them to decide it was time for a new knee but first I must do some things. I have to loose 10 pounds and I have to quit smoking. I can do both without to much difficulty. anytime I want a cigarette or eat some junk all I have to do is tell myself the longer it takes me to quit smoking or loose the weight the longer I will have to deal with the pain. I am scheduled for a nicotine screening on 28 July. If the result is negative and I have lost the weight I will get scheduled for my pre-ops. Thank you all for advising me to get a second opinion

Oh that's terrible news, my mother has suffered from hip pain as well. It's terrible, she cant sit for to long or lye in bed to long or her hips start to hurt her really bad. She definitely cant sleep on a hard bed, so much so that she has bought a memory foam mattress. She finds the mattress helps a little. I can't imagine having constant pain like that. But im sure its all ahead of me as i get older.

Just thought i'd let you know what has helped my mother, it a new pill called provailen, its not out long. I did a bit of research of on it and found that it was the only natural arthritis pain reliever available. My mother noticed the effects of the pill quite fast, so i just thought id give you a head up on something that will help you with the pain :)

Welcome to HealingWell.  I am sorry to read of your pain as I understand completely how nasty it is to be in pain.  I do not have any personal experience with the procedure your Dr. is suggesting however I am sure you will hear from some in the forum that does.

I had a very easy time with my knee replacement. I was also bone on bone due to traumatic arthritis and surgery after an auto accident. I was in the hospital three days, walked out with a walker and was walking independently in less that two weeks after I got home. I had good pain management, so really didn't have pain that I remember as being major. I did PT three times a week for four weeks afterward.

Three years later I'm still pretty much pain free (all of my joints ache at times, I have OA) and work out regularly, walk and do my normal activities.

If you decide on the surgery, it's a good idea to do quadricep exercises before hand (straight leg lifts) and remember to move as soon as possible after surgery. My doctor made me keep the leg flat on the bed for 12 hours; after that I was all over the bed. Next morning I was ready to get up with my walker.

I have severe knee pain also. I also have braces PTO that keep my knees from going out of joint. I started with bakers cysts that were caused by a low GLA. I took 2 or 3 1300mg a day of evening in primrose. That brought my GLA up and destroyed the bakers cysts without surgery or shots. I take Source Natural Hyaluronic Joint complex to keep the pain down and help fight the arthritis. I also take 4 grams of Turmeric curcumin along with 3grams of Omega 3 fish oil. I have reduced my pain level from 4-8, down to 2-4. It may not be perfect ...but I have my life back. I wish you luck and be sure to have great nutrition. Think of dairy products as the enemy and you will do great. Be happy and live your life and don't let the disease define who you are!

I have beed told that I have bilateral knee osteoarthritis. For me, the pain isn't so bad but I have a hard time standing up from seated, and with general movement (walking) around my house. I am a little over-weight as well. I have been doing some research and one friend suggested I check out these guys:

THey are pretty new, but say they will have a product out next year. Does anyone have any thoughts? I was told that their braces could provide all the benefits of normal? off-loader knee braces like those made by Don Joy or BREGG, but with the added benefit of mobility assistance. Apparently the assistance provided can also be fully adjusted / tuned to different levels and at different angles of knee flexion.

I appreciate it. That looks like a pretty cool product. I think in my case I have weak quadriceps as my main problem, and it looks like the acuknee is directed primarily toward alleviating pain.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll poke around there a bit more. I do like the sounds of the spring loaded product because it appears to offer leg muscle assistance directly, but they aren't on the market yet.

Yes both my wife and a very good friend have used the acuknee. My wife, who is a photo stylist and works in very rugged areas, was having severe knee pain. She was skeptical at first, but I contacted Dr. Martin Brown at the number on their site. He explained the technology and told me to give it a shot and if she wasn't happy with the results to return the unit free of charge. I bought a unit for her and she started using it. For the first few days it didn't seem to work, but after a week or so she started noticing dramatic results in pain reduction.

My good friend who is a lifelong dancer suffering from mild oa, was curious and started using it as well. She has also noticed a drastic decrease in her pain and began using it on both her knees.

I as well had an ACL and Meniscus repair in my right knee, but haven't had too many problems since. I use my wife's acuknee occasionally after I bike to reduce the pain. It usually works within a day and I'm not nearly as sore.

All I can recommend is to give them a call. Dr. Brown is the developer of the acuknee and he seems very approachable. After he said I could return the acuknee, I figured I had nothing to lose.

Because of my Air Force job, maintaining a mobile radar system, I spent up to 4 hours squatting since the system was designed for operators, not maintenance techs.
I was 22 y/o and could hardly walk because of shattered meniscus in both knees.
The medic who saw me, said there wasn’t much that could be done but the VA would help me ‘when you come in in a wheelchair’ and was about a year late in showing up with the problem.
At that age, I generally ran up and down steps two at a time but quit that to allow the cartilage to heal.

Around that same time (early 60s in France), AFEX had ‘Earth Shoes’ in the stores and examining them with their odd negative heels, I bought my first pair and wore them exclusively when off-duty.
My knees healed and I could walk without pain for years.
If you have ever walked on a dry, sandy beach, this is the sensation.
Your heels dig in and the sole of your foot lands mostly flat and this reduces the shock to the knee.

Living in Germany after my service was finished, I again started having problems again and my GP ‘prescribed’ Angora knee warmers.
Wearing these faithfully, the cartilage would heal in a few days and after healing, I was good for months.

Two years ago, I was again in pain when just walking, not stressing the meniscus at all and went looking for my negative heel shoes, which are now my shoe of choice again.
The procured knee warmers were not as effective and I apparently am now due for some surgery after recent MRI scans show the destroyed meniscus.

I can highly recommend both the knee-warmers and the negative heel Earth Shoes if your condition is not yet too severe.
Both of these helped stave off my current condition for over 50 years.
