I saw my surgeon yesterday for the 6 week post-op appointment. He was so pleased and obviously proud of "his work"! The staff took xrays and the doctor showed me how the various parts of the new hip line up with the parts of my other hip. I didn't completely follow, but I appreciated his treating me like a partner in this whole endeavor!
He was impressed that I am walking 1+ mile every day (weather permitting), and told me I can stop worrying about
the height of chairs and toilet seats. (I came right home and removed the over-toilet commode from my bathroom! Argh, how I've hated that!)
I had overdone a bit over the weekend, walking and puttering in the yard, and though I was supposedly supervising while my husband gardened for me, I couldn't help but pluck some weeds myself.... then I played organ for two services on Sunday, and by the second I was fighting tears, the hard organ bench and difficult pedal lines of the day's music were so taxing. So, once again, I found that I was merely human. It was especially nice, then, to have the doctor's encouragement yesterday.
So, 6 weeks out, and even though "overdoing" will bring on pain, I can do more than I've been able to for several years. What a miracle this surgery is!

Songlady..its been a year now since you had surgery, how is everything with your hip? Do you have any problems at all with it?

Hi - Thanks for reminding me of the one year anniversary!
I've done beautifully. No issues. Occasionally I'll get a bit of pain... the scar tissue will ache a bit when the weather changes for the worse. (I imagine that will get better over time.) But it's usually a twinge that goes away quickly. I haven't even wished for pain meds for it for 6 months at least. (Because of my UC, the strongest thing I can take OTC is tylenol.)
I was able to cross-country ski this winter some, just fine, and my pain-free range of motion is wonderful - I can play the organ and reach all kinds of high pedal notes with my right foot!! (Look out, Widor Toccata, here I come for Easter!!)
Of course, ahem, ahem, my left one is beginning to hurt more and more.... but I'm hoping I'll get another year or two out of it.

Songlady, you worked hard at your rehab, and I'm convinced that's the key to a good result. Glad to hear you're doing so well.
