I had my surgery on April 25th. Dr did an arthroplasty. I had a nerve block under my arm so didn't feel anything the first day. (Wacked myself in the head several times as I tried to manipulate my arm into my clothes). Immediately upon arrival at home that day I plugged into the ice/cold water machine. It pumped cold water through tubes to a pad which had been placed over the surgical site underneath my dressing. I wasn't able to take any narcotics as they didn't agree with me but found that the icing machine controlled my pain...I really didn't have much at all. It cycled 30 seconds on and 30 seconds off. I was very faithful about
staying plugged into it. I also kept my arm elevated as much as I could to help control swelling.
My dressing was removed after 9 days and I was put into a cast which goes 1/2 way up my arm. I feel more pain now than I did when I had the ice machine. I assume it is due to healing and stretching as I try to use my casted hand. The cast comes off June 5 (about 4 weeks in cast) and therapy begins the week after that.
All in all its been a positive experience and plan to do the other hand next spring.
