Knee pain post hip replacement

I had left hip replacement (twice in 2 1/2 weeks) June 2013. Doing all exercises and physio as required however, about 6 weeks ago started to experience increasing left knee pain. I do have arthritis in my knee(s), but nothing significant and it will likely not require replacement ever. There is a leg length difference post surgery - not sure if that's contributing to the pain. The knee pain seems to be getting worse and I'm getting really dejected about this whole thing - feel like I traded one issue for another.

I'd really appreciate recommendations from people - thanks.

I am sorry I am just getting to your thread - no good excuses, so please forgive me for missing your post.

If you have not done so by now, please do talk with you Dr. re this pain as it is hard to guess what is going on.  Many of our member have had this same surgery and I know they will share their own experiences with you.

Hi Princess in Pain

There's a chance the relief in your hip has made the pain in your knee heighten, just a thought. I know my leg length discrepancy causes pain and limping when I walk, I find that the pain radiates and is especially intense after prolonged activity.

If you read some other posts, as Kitt mentioned, there are a lot of other people on this forum that have hip and knee issues. Is the knee pain on the same side of the hip replacement? The pain could have something to do with the compensation your knee has been doing to help manage the hip pain.

I agree with Kitt, re:doctor but also think talking to your physiotherapist and getting some exercises to strengthen your quad and hamstring may reduce some of the pain.

I am 11 days post total hip replacement. I started getting same side knee pain the next dayy and it is very frustrating indeed. Specifically, there is pain running down the outside of my operated thigh to the lateral knee and just below.

I have seen several posts here with identicall symptoms. I've concluded that this is IT band syndrome. Not sure what is causing it, but it is interfering with an otherwise superb post-surgery recovery. I am working with a physical therapist and am due for my post-surg doc visit on 1/10. I will keep all posted, but I am convinced that IT band tightness/swelling is tugging the insertion point on the lateral knee.

I've been wondering if IT band tightness is a potential culprit (based on this thread and the other one). What does your P/T say about using a foam roller?
