Thanks Chotti. I am like you -- independent and a planner. And lucky to have a four-legged help. in my case it's a cat so probably a lot less helpful in practical ways but still a great and loyal companion.(Well, loyal until I run out of treats, anyway!)
So, Talon, you were right. My pain is not (only) from OA. I had xrays today and have bone spurs and an extremely straight, rather than curved, neck. Doc said that indicates severe muscle spasm. that part was also pretty obvious from my muscles twitching and being super, super tight. Doc said I probably have a pinched nerve in my neck. My MRI was only shoulder but that's what she thinks. said a neck mri is probably not necessary right now.
She said a cortisone shot would be both a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Ie. if it helps then the pain is from AC joint impingement and arthritis. If it doesn't, pain is from neck, and then an M rI could confirm.
I was kinda nervous about
the procedure but it turned out to be very easy. This doc knew what she was doing. Didnt even use any topical numbing medicine, which I've read is common for these shots. i definitely felt it but it was not nearly as bad as I expected. She did tell me I would feel worse before better. In fact she said "You're gonna hate me later tonight." well, it's 10 hours later and I definitely do feel some pain. So far it's a little different but no worse than how I was already feeling. i'm hoping it doesn't flare in the middle of the night. Taking Norco to stay ahead of it, just in case.
Starting PT also and feeling good about
that. Therapist is in the same office and I ket her briefly today. She seems great.
it makes such a difference when you trust your medical team. It is so hard to find good docs but today proved they do exist. I have an amazing psychotherapist, too, so I'm feeling really lucky. I started going to her in january for unrelated reasons but she has been a godsend in helping me deal with the emotional side of being in pain. turns out she worked in a pain clinic for two years so she has some experience. Lastly, I have you good people here on this message board, strangers giving freely of your time, your support and your good advice. I thank you.
I'm feeling very lucky and optimistic right now. My pain level is roughly the same but my emotional health is much, much better than it was a week ago. feeling happy and lucky and grateful and hopeful.
