Post-op Day 5 CMC thumb arthroplasty

Hi. This is my first posting. I'm so glad to have found this forum!
I'm post-op day 5 from left CMC thumb arthroplasty. The Doc used a tendon in my lower arm and placed it in the space between the bone-on-bone thumb joint. He also cleaned up several bone spurs. I was given a nerve block which numbed my shoulder, arm and hand. I was then given general anesthesia. I had my surgery early a.m. And that evening around 9 p.m. The block wore off almost all at once!!! The pain was of a quality I had never experienced. It was so severe that I had a total mental meltdown! There was no relief for me at all. I took 10 mg. Oxycodone with 600 mg. Ibuprofen, still no relief! I barely made it through that night. I am feeling better than I was and have a post-op in 3 days. Has anyone else ever had such an experience? I am not new to pain and surgery at all! I just wanted to reach out to connect with others who can understand what I am going through.

That's an experience that you never forget. I sympathize with you .

I had hand surgery and XIAFLEX injections which was worse. Both extremely painful in my hands. Pain meds didn't cut it.

I was keenly aware that anesthesia or pain blocks don't work well on me. After 3 total hip joint replacements waking up in recovery both times with no pain meds working just raw pain. I was screaming in my sheets. Then the second time the pain pump after surgery for hip joint replacement didn't work. I again wake from surgery screaming in excruciating pain . They saw off the femur bone drill a hole for metal component and pull out the ball joint replace with ball join component. Talk about incomptance... Finally after 20 minutes they figured out the plug was not working that the pain pump was plugged into. Amazing the things we survive.

We forgive but we never forget the pain.

I am sorry you had to endure that type of pain. It's unforgettable in my mind for ever. Docs always tell you before surgery and after you will not feel the pain that there are systems and protocol in place for everyone. Well.... Not always works. The anesthesiologist messed up in my opinion. For both of our situations. The block in my hand failed and they missed the proper area so after another try it kicked in. The first hand surgery I was totally knocked out. That's what I requested. I wish I had the second time.

It takes time to heal from hand surgery. I still have a splint on my fingers from January. Many surgeries over the past three years. I have severe Psoriatic arthritis and Dupuytrends Contracture in my hands. So just trying to keep my fingers from curling up in a fist. It's a loosing battle.

And OA in my hips and knees. Hips replaced now fighting knee replacement. It just never stops.

Stay positive for healing in important . Just because someone gives you a cactus doesn't mean you have to sit on it. LOL
