hip injection!

Hi all - So, in my former posts, I described seeing an ortho for the first time who said basically, "Hi, you need a hip replacement...!" and then I doc-shopped...... found a wonderful orthopod who said, well, yes, the joint is pretty messed up (he showed me how to look at the xrays, had me look over his shoulder)... but recommended I might want to try an injection to see if it could buy me time.

I had the injection 2 days ago and the pain is SOOOO much less! For months the pain has dragged me down; I've hardly had an interest in cooking or keeping the house decent because it hurt to move.

Today I've cooked, experimented with a new variation of roasted root veg., :-), have picked up and started to decorate for the Christmas holidays.....once in a while I'd get a stabbing hip pain, but it wasn't the constant aching, grating that I've had.

The injection was a steroid injection, done while the doc watched via some kind of x ray - a very high-tech Pain management/Medical acupuncturist office (and a month ago I didn't know what a PM doc was....!)....

Just wanted to share what's happening on this journey!

I get those shots in my knee's which need total knee replacements. They help for about 2 mos (for me) and then the pain slowly starts coming back. My doc will let me have them every 4 mos. I am at the point now, that my 2 mos is over and the pain is slowly coming back. I hope yours last longer. It is nice while the shots are working, they do give alot of relief. I had a really bad week recently, and strangely my knees aren't hurting right now.

hi, so glad it is working for you, mine lasts about 2 months then pain comes back....should have my next shot in 2 weeks i hope!!!!

It seems most of my pain is coming from si joint...so will beg consultant to inject there when i see him in january, take care xx

I also had steroid injections into my knee before surgery. It helped me a lot, as the others said,it lasted about 2 months. When you've grown used to not being able to do anything because your joint hurts all the time, even a short period without pain can be very restorative.

hi, just a recap, had the hip injection on the 16th dec, a big relief, but the back is still giving me big poblems.....

so it seems that the si joint is causing most of the trouble as it is in that area, after walking (not too far) my back aches like hell, (in the dimple area) so...si injection next ...i hope :)

I will probably need a cortisone shot in my hip, and I am terrified!!!
If anyone can relieve my mind, I'll appreciate it so very much!
I've had a cortisone shot in my shoulder f/ adhesive capsulitis and it didn't hurt. So, I am hoping it won't hurt in my hip either!

Good morning, Sungirl. I've had several cortisone injections in my hips because of bursitis. I've had them both standing and lying down but the point is to not tense your leg muscles during the shot. If you are standing, you should stand on the leg opposite the one getting the shot and let your other leg relax. So, if the shot is in the right leg, put your weight on the left leg and let your right leg relax, maybe bent a little off the floor. The last time I had one, the nurse did it with me lying on the table and I think that was actually the best way. (If your shot is for bursitis, be aware that the nurse or doctor will press around the hip area for the most painful spot and then put the injection there.)

Don't stress over this. When you're there, ask them if you can lie on the table to get the shot. Good luck!

Thank you so much Lanie for your tips. I haven't made my appt. yet thinking the aches will go away.
Usually, w/ my stretching, it relieves the discomfort but for some reason, it hasn't this time and has affected my groin area. I really appreciate your message and telling me not to stress.

Is sitting or riding in a car difficult for anyone? If I've sat or ridden in a car f/ a long period of time, it is not fun getting up. If I am at home, I try not to sit f/ an extending amount of time and riding in a car, I take rest stops. Still, it is quite uncomfortable. I really feel bad because my husband has concert tickets to one of his favorite bands, and I don't feel like I can sit through it, go upstairs, and dread seeing what the seats are like (to be comfortable). Not only that, it is about an hour trip to get there. I have been diagnosed w/ fibromyalgia, so along w/ hip issues, I am miserable. I am on Gabapentin and it has helped my neck/ shoulders a bit. I get depressed feeling like I let people down not being able to do what I used to could do. I don't like telling people no, but I also know what triggers more discomfort and how long it takes to recover from it.

Shots in a bursa don't hurt much at all and provide fantastic relief if the problem is bursitis. I wouldn't let a nurse do it though. I only trust my doctors, don't even want to be seen by NPs. Some are great, I'm sure.
