I am a 56 yr old who is suffering from knee pain and swelling. When I went to an Orthopedic surgeon he said "you probably have a torn meniscus, but are too old for surgery" I want to know why? I know a 40 year old who had surgery, is there some cut off, or do we just have poor health care options. This is the same response another person was given who is my age.

Hi Asmara & welcome to Healing Well. My suggestion is find a new orthopedic preferably someone that limits their practice to knees only. Believe it or not it makes a huge difference. My first ortho was a jack of all trades & could not find the tear. He referred me to a dr that did knees only & he found it & repaired it. I ended up with 4 scopes on one knee & 1 on the other.

Absolutely not, you are not too old to have it repaired that is pure BS in my opinion. I have never heard of such crap before.

Agree--find another doc; this one ought to be reported to the AMA! My aunt had this surgery 2 yrs ago and she is 69. Now she goes line dancing.

You need to get an MRI which shows the damage to see if it can heal on it's own. A good doctor can tell you if it can heal on it's own. Most times this problem can heal on it's own. My partner has a torn meniscus but the doctor does not recommend surgery. She has to rest her knee and put ice on it. It seems to be getting better. There are exercises you can do that can help with healing.
