Cortisone injections

In the past I have had my pointer finger injected a few times due to a pinched nerve/trigger finger issue.  The shots worked like a charm every time.  But I went in for an injection today in the same finger for arthritis pain relief (she inected a bit more cortisone this time around).  This is the first time I had the shot for arthritis related issues.  Do you find that these shots provide long term relief?  I know I can safely get about 3 injections a year but how many of you have had injections for years and did it cause any significant side effects to your tendons and/or joints?

Hey there,

I have had my thumb joint injected 3 times and the first two each lasted for about 9 months but the last time did little as I have bone on bone and really need surgery. 

I did not have any long term issues but I only had 3 shots.

I just had my first cortisone shot in my knee on 6/29/09. Unfortunately, it only lasted about 10 days for me. It still is helping a little, but those cattle prod pains still hit me, so I am thinking the bad pain will return sooner than later. I have not had any side effects from them at all. I will tell you the relief I felt for that 10 days was awesome. I will try again maybe in August to get the shots again and hope for better luck next time. If not, I will have to give in and have the TKR's.

I think I am more worried about long term damage that these shots may be causing. I once went to a hand surgeon so she could remove a cyst in my finger joint and she mentioned that because I have an IBD that it will weaken tendons and ligaments anyway; add a steroid to the mix and it can weaken it more. I don't know if this is true or not and truthfully it's one of those things that I will deal with it IF it happens. All I know is that I just couldn't endure this finger pain anymore. It was excruciating and that is why I broke down and got the injection.

Gail, sometimes these shots can have a cumulative affect. I get cortesteroid injections in my neck due to bulging discs and the first one didn't help much this time around (I also had a series of 3 last year), the second one was a bit better and the third one was the charm. So this may be the case for you - hopefully! :)

Hi everyone, I have a heel spur and received one cortisone that was like walking on clouds for about 4months and then another that has yet to be effective. Does any one know of any thing else I can do? A calcium regulator? An herbal? I take glucosamine regularly and the antiinflammatories are kicking my kidneys hard. It is like having a jack (from the old game of "jacks") taped onb the bottom of my heel while I'm about. Makes me crabby.

I'm not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once. :-) When my doctor diagnosed me with osteoarthritis, she commented that the regular cortisone shots that I took for eczema as a child, through my early twenties, contributed to my joint pain. Apparently is was an unknown side effect back then. SWEET! I was getting varying quantities of cortizone each month for a couple of years, then went to 4 times a year for about another 5 years or so. I guess since it's technically classified as a steroid, it can have multiple side effects.

We're talking about treatments, and it's a shame we're not talking about cures. Being in constant pain is not fun, and frankly it just wears you out.

I've got knee, hip and back issues related to my OA.

I would say be careful with the steroids....

I have not had heel spurs but I had a bone spur on my great toe of my right foot and had to have it surgically removed.  That worked very well for me but I believe with a heel spur they like to try different treatments for at least a year before any surgery is considered.

I've had heel spurs - the doc called them "mega-spurs" - !! And about 14 years ago I could hardly walk and was thinking longingly of surgery! I lost 10 lbs and also had orthotics made for my shoes - and always wore good athletic shoes. Mine were "hard" orthotics but I think I'd go for soft ones if I did that again.... Anyway, that all helped more than the cortisone shot!
Of all my issues, my heels are fine. I oughta count that as a blessing indeed! I hope yours responds to something, too!

Thank you stkitt and songlady, so far the only treatment I've been offered has been a cortisone shot. I did buy a pair of White Boots (packers) and they have alleviated the pain tremendously but they are a little large for casual.
