Hello everyone,

Found this Forum looking for information and decided to join to find help and support.

I am 63years young line in the UK and have OA in both shoulders and left hip. I already have had shoulder surgery to remove a bone spur but recovery will take up to a year.

When I am ready (possibly in the new year) I will have to have the same done to my other shoulder.

Its a struggle to do work above shoulder height and carrying shopping which is a NO NO for me so I have become a "trolley pusher" when shopping around the market.

I still work though sat at a desk mostly but get fed up of taking meds and trying different creams for relief, I also have a TENS machine which I use but not always with success probably as I don't spend enough time using it and placing the pads.

Hi postman,  I'm fairly new here too, but wanted to welcome you. I'm wondering if you can tell me how you were diagnosed with OA ? One doctor did a CT scan and told me I have it bad in my left hip, while another came along, he took her place since she moved and said an MRI shows no OA. He said the pain is from Fibromyalgia.   So I do not know what to think. It sure feels like OA.

I wonder if you might have OA and Fibromyalgia, Debbie. It s a common situation. I have OA, Fibro and Inflamamtory Arthritis. They all hit at once last Spring and kept me down for a while. I knew I had OA but the Fibro and Inflammatory Arthritis and low Vit D levels just sort of peaked at one time. I couldn't walk for a while. Very scary. The doctors should be able to see OA on your xrays. Are you seeing an orthopaedic or just a GP? Best Wishes, V

Hello and welcome.  Strange that one would say yes and one would say no.  X-ray images of your affected joint may reveal a narrowing space within a joint, which indicates that the cartilage is breaking down. An X-ray may also show bone spurs around a joint. However, many people have X-ray evidence of osteoarthritis before they experience any symptoms. MRI uses radio waves and a strong magnetic field to produce detailed images of bone and soft tissues, including bone cartilage. This can be helpful in determining what exactly is causing your pain.

Perhaps you want to get one more opinion as you have contradicting opinions.

The other thing that causes me to believe it is arthritis in my hips is I have experiencd this same exact type of pain since I was about 20, back then, (I'm 54 now) it only happened when I would get too cold at night, or sleep in a sleeping bag on the hard ground.

 I was also dx with arthritis in my left shoulder and my doctor said she could tell I had it in my knees too, their really creaky. It sounds like gravel is in my knees, and hurts when I go up and down the stairs

I do not think my hips would only hurt when I walk too far, anything over 2 blocks now and a year and a half ago I was walking 2 -4 miles several times a week, it hurts worse when it's humid, and many times wakes me up at night.

My fibro pain is more like having the flu, plus alot of other stuff thrown in like fatigue, insomnia, and sensitivity to noise, odors, and lets not forget the tinnitis.

I have an appointment with a Rheumy, though it is not till march.
