Hip Dysplasia & Torn Hip Cartilage

Hello, everyone.

I saw my othropedic doctor yesterday. I was expecting to hear I might have a spur in my hip. Nope.  Instead I was told I have hip dysplasia and torn cartilage. That is what is causing the sharp pain in the inside of my thigh.  That is why I feel like I am walking on uneven ground.  That is why I feel like my legs are attached with strings that are stretched out, and loose.  Go figure!  Always something new to digest. 

Doc thinks removing the bursa in my left hip will help a lot w/the pain. To "fix" my hip would require trying to stitch together the torn cartilage, and/or "cleaning up" the frayed cartilage.  Then he would need to reshape my femur, as it is too big. That would require six weeks of no weight bearing. From what I have read, people w/this condition often end up w/a THR anyway, so I am not really hot on the idea of this surgery at this time.

Then there is the subject of my knees which both need TKR.  I was thinking about all this, and wondering where the surgery stops.  I have pretty bad OA in my right shoulder, too, and some in my left shoulder. 

In addition to that, the right hip is starting to hurt. I had a shot of steriod in that hip a couple of months ago. It helped a lot, but it didn't completely take away the pain. Doc says the right hip probably has dysplasia, too. 

What do you all think? I just want to hide in denial for a while. Anyone care to join me there?

I'd hide with you. I'm have bloodwork done to see if I'm allergic to myself or have Lupus! I'm scared!

If you're going to need TKR and THR why not get them both done at the same time? Kill two birds with one stone? Why not just tell the doctor to replace them all in one fell swoop? ;)
Just joking... I know it would be too much.
When you feel you're at the end of your rope... tie a knot and hang on.

I am with Joy as I hide out too rather then face the music but usually come out in the end to deal with whatever my challenge may be.

I would ask your Dr. which surgery you need first that would give you the most relief of your pain.  I know people who have had bilateral knee replacement but it runs about 50/50 on what their opinion is. 

Sometimes I feel I need a total body from nose to toes and make that a face lift too.

Hey Vannie,

A coworkers husband had the same diagnosis. He did the clean up surgery etc. but needs to have a hip replacement as the pain returned. I say tell them to go ahead and do the hip replacement. At least thats what I would do, so you don't have to go back in again.

I feel for you, I need two knee replacements myself, and have been putting them off with cortisone shots every 3 months. Gentle hugs!

I have an appointment with a new rheumatologist on May 10th. I have OA, but I also have some form of inflammatory arthritis. My ortho doesn't want to do any surgery until the inflammation is under control from whatever else is going on with me. I will let you all know what my new rheumy says. I really need to find some answers and treatment. As it is now, I have to take a medrol pack every two weeks or I cannot stand the pain. It gets to a level nine and I am in misery...no sleep, etc.

I'm sorry to hear you are still struggling with that foot and ankle. I hope it is getting better. Do you have OA in your ankle? I can relate to your suffering with Asthma. I have that, also. Since I have been using Advair, I have been much better. Last summer I had a bad asthma attack, and I took 60 mg of prendisone for three days, then 40 mg for three days, then 20 mg for three days. That gave me a short rest from the arhtirits pain. :)

I had an MRI of my knee a couple of weeks ago. I have a lateral meniscus tear and lots of inflammation. I have an appointment with a rheumatologist on May 10th. I hope she is a good doc. There seems to be so many bad ones out there. My ortho says I have some sort of inflammatory arthritis, along with the OA. Oh yes, found out I have lots of OA behind my knee caps. Crunch, Crunch, Crunch.
