AS at 17

Hello! I'm new here and my 17 year old son was diagnosed with AS about a month ago. We went for a second opinion and this new doc wasn't convinced that's what it is. He wants to try him on Meloxicam and see how he does. Any advice or info on AS or this medication would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, in the same family of medications as ibuprofen and naproxen (and aspirin, too.) NSAID's are effective for any pain related to inflammation, such as muscle injuries an arthritis. Because of the anti-inflammatory properties, they can actually often prevent pain rather than just relieving it after it starts. They're most effective taken regularly for chronic conditions; I find if I'm more than a couple of hours late taking my meloxicam I'll start having pain and it will take a few hours for it to go away.

The most common side effect, as with all NSAID's, is irritation of the stomach. For this reason it's a good idea to take with food. I take mine each morning with breakfast.
