Dear members,
My 64-year-old Dad has severe knee OA. Doctor's told him that he would need joint replacement surgery soon. He's very scared of surgery so I try to help him.
My question is, do you think it's possible to avoid surgery and treat osteoarthritis naturally? (with a different lifestyle or supplements?) I'm asking this because one of my friends was able to cure his rheumatoid arthitis with supplements (doctors couldn't help him). I know that RA is very different from OA, but I still hope that there is a solution for osteoarthritis other than meds and surgery.
Any ideas?

Rheumatoid arthritis cannot be cured with supplements. It is a disease that has remissions and flares, so sometimes can be quiescent for long periods. Perhaps some supplement helped induce a remission, but it is likely to flare up again at some point.
OA is an entirely different disease and is usually a result of wear and tear on or injury to a joint rather than a malfunctioning immune system. There are numerous herbs and supplements claimed to help with the symptoms, I'm sure if you google "natural osteoarthritis treatments" you'll find web sites discussing these. Some people are helped by things such as osteochondroitin, for instance, while others are not. There's also an arthritis diet which seems to help some people; I'm not all that familiar with it because supplements and diets never helped me.
I would caution you that for every honest person out there trying to help people with "natural" products there are ten just trying to take your money. Be cautious and look for some documentation of a substances effectiveness over and above the testimonials many web sites pay people to write.

I'm
open to new ideas, but I agree with you, I need to be really cautious. My problem is that there is so much information about
natural osteoarthritis treatments that I can't decide which one is legit or scam. E.g. my Dad tried chondroitin and glucosamine, what a waste of money it was!
On the other hand, I'm an optimistic person and I truly believe that the human body is an amazing system which is able to repair itself if we support it with a healthy way of life. Maybe I'm wrong, this is just my own theory. Anyway, I never give up and I hope to find some real people who had real positive experiences with alternative remedies.

I do have one friend that feels she's benefitted from the anti-arthritis diet. I found this Health article that discusses some other remedies:

Thank you for the link! The anti-arthritis diet sounds interesting, what does it mean exactly?

Hello, I know it's an old post, but I would like to share my thoughts with you, it may be helpful. It is possible to treat OA naturally. There's a so-called "Arthrose Selbsthilfe Gruppe" in Germany (Osteoarthritis Self-help Group) where the members could achieve very good results with changing their diet. There's another useful website by Dr. Wolfgang Feil which states that cartilage is able to repair itself in case it gets enough nutrition. It's a pity that this website is available only in German, too. I also remember reading in a paleo diet forum that eliminating sugar and flour can help a lot in relieving joint pain. So if I were your Dad, I would start experimenting with changing my diet. I've read lots of books, blogs and forums about
various food trends and to me the paleo diet seems to have the most sense. The elimination diet is also said to be helpful. (But please inform yourself about
these things and consult with a doctor before you start changing anything)
Cheers

Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately I don't speak German, but if you could recommend me some useful English websites or books I would be extremely grateful.

Dr. Bergman is a chiropractor who explain how to help arthritis with diet. The body is healed by getting vitamins and minerals in the body. Diet is the key to treating all disease.
