Hi, I'm 45 and in the last three years I've had Arthroscopic surgery on my rt hip, then a resurfacing ( Metal on metal ), had to have that removed in April of 13 and a replacement done. The surgeon used a bigger ball than normal for what ever reason...it dislocated 2 weeks after surgery and a week to the day, it dislocated again. The Dr. had to do another replacement 2 weeks after that. During the relocating they used what I call a " Come along " Lol to relocate it both times. Well I found out I had a tear in a muscle in my knee and I have to have ANOTHER surgery April 1st of this year to repair the tear ! I have been on 5 10mg Hydrocodone's and 2 30 mg Morphine ER's for over a year. What in this world are they going to be able to give me to control my pain since I have such a high tolerance for pain med's ? Any idea's as to what I may suggest to the surgeon ?

Hi lukesdaddy and welcome to HW. Im actually from the chronic pain forum here at HW and just happened to see your post and think I can help.
You actually have several options that would be stepping up. MS comes also in 60mgs so they could opt to go from 30 to 60 and change you b/t med to oxy ir post op. There is also Oxycontin, fentnyl patches which are probably the strongest option
open. The biggest factor is going to be what your Dr feels comfortable writing.
Rest assured there are many options left and in various combinations that should provide adequate relief.

Thank you so much Vickie for your help. I will of course talk with him. I am a little uneasy taking things I've never taken and was wondering what to talk to him about
. I thought I was going to die from pain after the 2nd replacement !!

Unfortunately LD I too had post replacement pain issues since Im a CPer and have taken opiates long term for many years some Drs dont account for those tolerance issues and the result is we are left with under treated post-op pain issues.
Its very wise that you make sure you and Drs treating you have a plan beforehand. Its extremely hard to get that pain back under control once you have lost it.
Under the circumstances increasing your base med and changing your rescue med would be the way I would opt to go. You would then only be adding one different or new med.
Just get it it worked out to something you feel comfortable with and make sure all your drs are on the same page as to which one of thems treating your post- op pain and who to call if you feel control slipping.
Good luck and if you have anymore questions or concerns or just want to talk, please feel free to come to the Chronic pain forum here at HW and give me a yell.

Hi, I six shoulder surgeries in a row, the last three being replacements, a humeral resurfacing, then total shoulder then reverse shoulder all in 2 years. Of course i am a chronic pain patient. I have ended up with PM doc who believes in methadone, period, for pain. That is what I get.
I had a tough time at the last surgery as my ortho brought in a pain service to handle post op pain. Neither one did, thinking the other did. I now know what a 10 is. I had two interoperative fractures besides the replacement.
Anyway, i have learned to let the pain doc do the speaking. I discuss what I have taken and my reaction, then let the doc tell me his ideas. As he said, he will not let me suffer. There are so many options and some docs favor one treatment over another.
Good luck.
