Cortisone Shot for Osteoarthritis (shoulder)

Hey guys , first time poster here. I have recently been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Osteoarthritis after playing hockey my entire life. Currently my range of motion is nearly cut in half and it's very painful to weight train or play hockey due to discomfort in the shoulder joint and shooting pains down my bicep. The doctor advised that I receive a cortisone shot to help me get back onto the ice and into the gym.

I'm curious if anyone else has received this shot and if it helped them? Also, how painful is the shot and how long after the shot is your shoulder sore?

I have Osteoarthritis in many joints. I have not had a cortisone shot. I will tell you about my Son who is in his 40s. He injured a tendon in his elbow at his workplace. He did get a cortisone shot. Cortisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory. He is pretty tough but the pain has been unbearable before the shot. He was not allowed to lift and had to give up things like golfing. My Son had to stop working as it involved lifting heavy items. He had to sell his Condo. He is still looking for work that will not be so hard on his arm. He is able to move his arm more now but he is not 100% OK and still has pain issues. It has been a year since the Shot. His Rheumatologist will not do another one yet. Not sure if the shot itself is painful.

My son played hockey when he was young. He injured his shoulder when he was in his early teens. He also played rugby in high school. His shoulder kept popping out. He had surgery to pull up the muscles. It was successful. The tendon has nothing to do with his shoulder.

Do hope the Cortisone shot will help you.

Shot is easy, and there should be relief, not pain. Sure, it is a longer injection than a flu shot, but for most folks it brings relief pretty quickly( including me,who has had cortisone in the foot, shoulder, hip,hands and neck). Most docs don't like to give more than three in a single joint in a year, and some joints actually need a few, in sequence to do their thing. You might also want to se a PT to work on the opposing muscle groups.

I have had cortisone shots in both knees. Since there is not much cartilage left under my kneecap, the shots gave me no relief at all.
I did get a cortisone shot in my elbow for tennis elbow, and it work great. The pain before the shot was terrible, and a few days later it was gone. about 5-6 months later the pain came back, another shot and it was better. That was about 9 months ago, so we'll see.
Not sure about shoulder pain, but if the arthritis is bad enough, I doubt it will help. Good luck!
