I was trying to find out more about chicken/or poultry type allergies and I really had a hard time finding out anything substantial. Wish I could be more of a help there...what I did find, however was a link to "Common Food Allergens" and thought this might be of value to many of you with food allergies!

I have also been trying to fiind information about this allergy for about 3 years now. The stuff I have found is very minimal and leaves me alot of open-ended questions.
There are a few websites that do have information on this, but they are all restricted and requires a paid membership.

Mammalian and avian food products
Cross-sensitization is more common within than between mammalian meats, but clinical correlation with sensitisation is generally under 50%. For avian foods, sensitisation has been described to a-livetin found in feathers, egg and meat, and associated with reaction to chicken meat in 22% to 32%. When chicken meat allergy is present without egg allergy, the risk of reaction to multiple species of avian meats (turkey, pheasant, and quail) may be increased.

I'm still looking for something more re this as well. I checked out the site you found, and it's about what little that I found already...you'd think that with all the people here bringing this particular allergy up, that we'd be able to find a bit more on this!

You must be a fire and emt, right? My youngest son is an EMT and volunteers his time w/first responders
and another community's fire rescue. He's working toward Paramedic.

Hello Teri and linc :-)

 Teri - I have noticed that most sites will and do overlap in information. They are focused more on the "big 8" allergen list, you know, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, fish, seafood, wheat, and soy.. I believe it is this way beacuse these allergies are 90% of all allergies. I have gotten the weirdest looks, and got told by emergency doctors that they never heard of a "chicken allergy".

  I think it is awesome that you have taken an interest in this allergy. And with any information please let me know thanks. cool

  Thanks for the link! I'd be sure to check it out! Also thanks for looking out for stuff about this poultry allergy! .. It does get frustrating with very little information, not only form the net, but allergist, and doctors aswell! Although I am very lucky to have a GP who is very understanding, and trying to help as much as she can.

  About my nick "fireMT" ... I am an EMR (emergency medical responder), this summer I am going to try and get on with a fire department outside of the city! So thats the "fire" part. The "MT" part is because I am currently a massage therapy student!  ... and thats how I came up with the name!

  Thats awesome that your son is going into the emergency services! Best wishes to him!

  After I recieve my advanced MT diploma, I want to expand my knowledge in the emergency services, so i'll also be looking forward to the paramedic courses and what nots. I am just not sure how to go about it, as I also want to get into respiratory therapy (another 4 years in school).

I haven't given up on our search for "Chicken" allergies tongue but I've found an article that may help to explain a few things. Please also check my thread on "Food Intolerances" as it may also help.

The article states that many people who are "allergic to one food type, may find themselves allergic to other 'cross over' type foods."

So perhaps if one is allergic to eggs, that may account somewhat to an allergy to chicken or poultry products. That's not to say this is the complete answer, but it is one thought.

I have yet to find a specific article on allergies to Chicken or Poultry from a well written reliable source. So this is why when I found this article and source, I thought it may help explain more.

Yeah the food intolerance vs. true food allergy is hard to determine which is which. Although they are both treated the same! ..
When i started to notice something was not right (i would eat, and then literally be sick for 7 days with doubling over cramps) I went to a couple doctors (just GP's) and they said it was food intolernce, but did no test. I have left it for a couple weeks, until I ended up in the ER. They suggested it was an anaphylatic reaction, and go seek out an allergist. I first found a doctor (the one I have now), told her about my experience and sent me off to an allergist. Saw the allergist and found out I do indeed have food allergies. Worst ones being chicken, and tuna, with a few tiny ones to; peas, msg, sulfites, soy, strawberries, melon. I have avoided all for the next 2 years, with a couple incidents. I since then have been tested again, and my only allergies now are fowl and fish (these ones have gotten much worse over the years) while the little ones are no more a worry, and I can continue to eat them :D

I would always get sick around the holidays. Bad "colds" and stomach distress after dinner. Gave up the turkey and the live Christmas tree and boughs and am now healthy during the holidays. I seem to be most allergic to turkey and game hens. I can eat chicken in moderation but am no bothered at all by eggs. This fits with the article at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=pubmed&uid=9756209&cmd=showdetailview&indexed=google.

Now I have an excuse to have prime rib, rack or lamb or salmon for the holiday meal. Never liked turkey that much anyway.

I to suffer from allergies (anything to do with birds,feathers,eggs,dust,meat etc).Until I found this forum I thought I was the only one.I started having problems when I became pregant with my son 13 years ago.It started with eggs,metallica feeling in my mouth,ears itching on the inside,throat swelling.From that day on it was turkey,chicken or foul of any type even my much loved parrot and feather pillow.People who hear this think I'm crazy.I can't tell you how happy I am to find that I am not the only one.My doctor also believes this is related to my beveloping asthma.If others have gotten asthma after words please let me know I am just wondering if it could be possible.Thanks Mickela confused

Hello,

 I'm on a search looking for anyone who is going through the same thong as I am.  I have been dealing with "allergies" to the smells of all nuts, poultry, and other things as well; those are just the main two triggers.  If anyone has any information on possible treatments or something of that sort, any help would be much appreciated.  I have been dealing with this issue for the past 17 years and I finally feel that now is the time to search.

Poultry, nuts and fish are my exact food allergies. And inhalation of chicken and fish can cause a sever reaction in me! What type of reactions do you get? Anaphylactic aswell?

My reactions aren't exactly anaphylactic since I was put on medication. I just get realy pale (almost ghost like), sweaty, my face swells, i get disoriented, really sleepy, my joints hurt even more than useual, and i get a sort of modeled look to my skin ( it looks like i have red spider webs on my skin.  If i don't get out to the smells fast enough I do get some hives.  Before meds I had projectile vomiting, luckly that part has stopped. tongue

How difficult have you found trying to aviod the smells?

that still sounds pretty severe .... whhich meds are you on? lol i don't go out much so i don't run into the smells often. one of the hardest places is actually the ER ...lol

Very true. I have also found the hospital to be the worst place to be. quite ironic i'd say. I'm currently takeing two different meds, one for useually used for migranes and the other is useually for seizures.  The combo of the two seem to work as long as i get out of the smells within a minute or so.  i have also found that taking a steriod after being exposed helps to limit my recovery time to about 2-3 days.  I'm still kinda recovering from running into a person eating chicken noodle soup from friday. sad   useually after something like that i go home and sleep but I had to stay where i was.  in doing so i found out that my cordination is horrible after being exposed.  What do you do for a living that allows you to not have to go out?

I'm actually looking into the asthma issue right now, which is what led me to this site.

I use to LOVE chicken until a few years ago when I suddenly started getting sick when I at it. Still do not know why it seemed to happen over night but many other symptoms started appearing at the same time. Mental fog, confusion, loss of energy, weakness, achy joints, skin break outs, asthma, and a few other. Now it feels like my throat closes up a little every time I try to swallow any type of poultry. Needless to say, I won't even try now.

I quit eating all poultry just because it made me ill, but I am beginning to think I have an allergy. I also have had a feather pillow (that I LOVE).. but last night I tested out this allergy theory by replacing my pillow.

My asthma congestion was not nearly as bad this morning (No need to take meds! YAY) I think I'm going to have to tell my hubby that we both need to remove all the feather pillows and reclean the bedroom to remove all remaining feathers and allergens. Today is the first day in over 6 months that I haven't had to use an inhaler and take Singulair early in the morning! (Cleaning the bedroom is going to be a MASSIVE CHORE! I'll let you know how well it works and if there might be a link to the asthma issues)

Oddly enough, when I travel out of town, I don't have problems with asthma because I don't have feather pillows in hotels. (I should have considered this years ago!)

When I went to the doctor about all these strange symptoms that suddenly developed a few years ago, NOT ONCE was I tested for allergies. $12,000 dollars later and massive testing for MS, tumors, MRI's, and over medication.... and it might be as simple as an ALLERGY? Guess we'll find out.

Geez, no fun at all. Hope you are feeling better!

For the working part... right now I have 3 casual careers/jobs.... Unfortantly that is where I am stuck. I need to work! and want to work!!! but it's sooo hard finding a place where no ones eats! Where I work right now is for a tissue bank, so I am pretty much just in the Operating Room, no food there :D .. but it's only a couple times a month... and the other job as a set designer (set up/ take down of decor) is a risky one, also very casual work. And the 3rd one, is setting up my own Massage Therapy Clinic, as I'm a massage therapist.

What do you do for a living??

feeling better now thanks. Right now I'm in college and working at a local hardware store.  Useually I have no problems there unless I come in contact with a customer who has just eaten chicken or somekind of nuts.  My coworkers are very simpthetic to my situation.  Every time we get a new person we ask them to please not bring either chicken, poultry, or nuts for meals so that way I won't get sick.  The grocery store that is next door does sometimes cause a problem. Being that the whole plaza shares a roof the smells waft over into our section.  Friday nights and Saturdays are interesting when they really kick up the friers.  I've been at the hardware store for about 6 years but soon will have to move on. 

Im looking into being a technician on airplanes but that is another 3 or 4 years of schooling to do and because of my achey joints am haveing second thoughts.  I figure though that the smells of the fuel and oil would cover up any other smells.

I was possibly looking into becoming a nurse but I was afraid of the cafeteria smells that go through the building.  Even when I go for testing in the most secluded areas I tend to get sick. 

Right now I'm just searching for a job that I will be able to do that has good benifits (especially health insurence tongue ) and that i won't get sick at.  Thus far I am not coming up with very many.

 I was wondering what kind of "dwelling" you live in.  I am still in my parents house.  I am affraid of getting an appartment because of the smells that the other tenants can create.

Also, i have found that if I have something to block the smells that it gives me a better chance of recouping and a little extra time to get out.  Here's some cool sites if you are interested in it.

I also still live with my family in our house! Due to the same issue about the apartments.

Those are interesting pendants!

I don't find that if I mask the smell the outcome will be different. Usually if I get out of the place fast enough I'll be just fine with some benadryl.

Just wondering, have you had the RAST test done for chicken?
