I BELIEVE I HAVE HAD ASTHMA SINCE I WAS 16. I AM NOW 45. IT WENT AWAY FOR A LONG TIME. JUST OFF AND ON STUFF. I NEVER KNEW WHAT IT WAS. I WOULD BE SHORT OF BREATH AND BLAME IT ON THE ALLERGIES. BUT JUST RECENTLY I WAS RUDELY AWAKENED!
LAST SATURDAY MY HUSBAND AND I WENT TO VISIT FRIENDS AND AS I WAS TALKING TO HER I WENT TO SAY SOMETHING AND I COULDN'T BREATH NO WARNING!!!! I WAS SCARRED. NOT BEING ABLE TO BREATH LASTED about 15 SEC. THEN I WAS ABLE TO GET SOME AIR.. THE WHOLE THING LASTED about 20 MIN. THEN WHILE I WAS AT WORK, I WAS HELPING ONE OF THE NURSES WITH A PRINTER. I WENT TO TURN AROUND AND SIT IN MY SEAT. THEN OUT OF NOWHERE I COULDN'T BREATH NOTHING WOULD PASS IN MY LUNGS FOR A GOOD LONG MINUTE OR SO ACCORDING TO THE NURSE I WORK WITH. SHE SAID I WAS GREY AND PASTY. MAN I WAS SCARRED. I WAS POUNDING MY CHEST AND STOMPING MY FEET TO TRY TO open UP MY LUNGS. I THOUGH I WAS NEVER GOING TO BREATH AGAIN.!!!!!!
SINCE THEN I HAVE SEEN A CARDIOLOGIST WHICH IS WHAT I WORK FOR. AND I WAS REFERRED TO A PULMONILOGIST AND THEY CONFIRM THE DX. I NOW HAVE TWO INHALERS AND I HAVE TO FINISH UP THE 4 PART TEST (PULMONARY FUNCTION TEST ) I BELIEVE. I PRAY I NEVER HAVE TO GO THROUGH THAT HORROR EVER AGAIN. BUT IF I DO I PRAY SOMEONE IS THERE IN CASE I PASS OUT.!!!!!

I hope you feel better on your medications. Prayers and hugs to you. You may want to figure out what you are allergic to so you can avoid your allergens.

Welcome to HealingWell.  As you can already see, we have a great support team here.  As Beachmom said, you probably also need to see an allergist.  Hopefully, they will also give you a nebulizer.  They make nice, small portable ones now that you can even plug up in your car.  It gives you a real sense of security.  They only cost around $100.00.

Please keep us posted and let us know what you find out.  Before long, you will feel like you're part of a big family here.

 I hope this never happens to you again either...how scary that must have been!

I hope the meds help with your asthma. What meds did you doctor put you on?

GoNuts,

You definitely need to see either an allergist or pulmonoligist.  In my unprofessional opinion, I don't think you should leave home without having the proper tools in case it happens again and there is no one around to help you.

My asthma is severe.  I never leave home without my portable nebulizer which can be used in the car, my inhaler, my epi pen and a bottle of water.  I would much rather be able to get it under control myself than have to go to my doctor's office or even worse have to go to the ER and have to take three or four injections of epinephrine.

Sounds like hyperventilation to me. With Asthma the problem is with exhaling, at times one can "trap air" and not get the exhaled air to exhale. What happens is that your lungs become so over-inflated you cannot move air in or out. This is what can cause death for Asthmatics, call a Doc quick.
