I have only been on Flovent for a week now. I have noticed a small difference already I am able to do more than I was able to before. But I have felt really tired lately and been sleeping more and I have loss my appetite. I also have a lil bit of sore throat and stuffy nose. I know some of these are side effects. Will my body get use to the medicine or do I need to go talk to my doctor again?

Your body should adjust to the medication. If it doesn't improve in the next week or so, then talking with your doctor might be a good idea. Good luck,

Be sure to rinse out your mouth after each inhale, this will lessen side effects. Most side effects should be temporary but sometimes one person reacts poorly to one or another medication. See if they clear up in a week or so and if not see your doctor.

Thanks....I will see how things are in about another week or so. Its helping a lot and I like that part. I actually fell asleep early last night and forgot to take my second dose along with the one this morning...shame on me and im feeling it now....so I can tell its working and Im gonna make sure I dont miss another dose!!

Well I think im getting use to Flovent but now I have come down with Bronchitis....its just one thing after another.

Mia,

Take very good care of yourself with the bronchitis.  I have only had asthma for about six years or so.  I am used to it going into bronchitis, but this time it went into bacterial pneumonia, which I am still recovering from.

I have never had that happen before.  So, be very careful if you are around other people.  Wash, wash and wash your hands again.  If you are out in public, use a tissue or a part of your clothing to open and close doors.  I could not believe I went from bronchitis to bacterial pneumonia over-night.

If you are used to dealing with bronchitis, you will know if there is something else going on.

Sorry to hear that Carla...I hope you get better soon. I figured you were not feeling well b/c I had not seen you on here in a few days.

Im not really use to having bronchitis...even though I had it twice in a row last year. So are there any signs that I should look out for that means its getting worse? Right now my chest is really congested and tight.... I cough 24/7 and im just exhausted from all of it. At first I thought it was a cold but it went straight to my chest and I dont have any of the sypmtoms of a head cold. Like I said im coughing up phlem and its yellow- grayish green in color. I have been using my albuterol to help with the tightness and when I use it I bring up a lot of phlem. I have a hard time getting to sleep due to coughing and then I use my albuterol inhaler which keeps me up longer. Do I need to call my doctor or wait this out a little longer?

Yes I do have a peak flow meter and my best so far has been 450. Last night my average reading was 310 and today it was 380. I know there is a green, yellow and red zone. I dont know where to set mine at. On my good days I average between 420-450.

On my meter I have my zones marked at 20% a below my personal best for my yellow zone and anything 50% and below my red zone. Your doctor can tell you if that is how he wants you to do it. Mine said that is pretty regular. I hope this helps.

Mia,

You definitely need to call your doctor.  The discolored junk you are bringing up means you also have infection in your lungs.  Your doctor will most likely put you on an antibiotic.  Make sure you tell him how much you are coughing and he will most likely put you on a cough syrup.  You see, the more you cough and inflame your bronchial tubes, thus making your whole situation worse.

Dealing with asthma is a real learning process.  I had to go through the same thing you are going through, not knowing what to do or when to call the doctor.  Please make that call to the doctor tomorrow.

I work up this morning and my chest was sore from coughing so much and it felt like someone was sitting on my chest. But I called my Doctor's office this morning. They weren't sure if he needed to see me..he may just call a Px in for me. So we will see what happens.

Mia,

That's good that he put you on an antibiotic, but in my opinion (I am not a medical professional, just someone who has been dealing with this personally for over six years) you need to be on a good cough syrup. 

If you don't get that cough under control, I'm afraid you are going to get worse before you get better.  Seriously, I would call his office and ask for some cough syrup to be called in.  I want you to get better soon.  The more you cough, the more inflamed your bronchial tubes become, thus making your bronchitis worse.  The antibiotic needs the help of a cough syrup.

If it helps at all while you are waiting to hopefully get cough syrup from the doctor, I found that for some reason when no otc cough syrup will help me cough less, the robitussin cough uh...pills?  Gel caps?  I forget what they are called but it's robitussin pills of some sort instead of liquid, that made me cough less when nothing else seemed to help.  Also nice to not have to taste cough syrup cool

I hope the antibiotics work soon for you!

Right now I am using an OTC cough medicine and its helping so far. I didnt realize how much I was coughing and my chest is sore from it. Question... is feeling short of breath normal with bronchitis? I know my peak flows are pretty low compared to what they normally are.

Asthma is a type of bronchitis (bronchitis is just a fancy way of saying inflammation in the bronchial tubes), so yes, shortness of breath can occur with bronchitis.

You might want to avoid eating a lot of dairy products until you are over this infection - dairy proteins promote the production of mucus and you already are dealing with enough of that without adding to it.

Well its going on day 4 of the antibiotic treatment and I feel a lil better but my cough still sounds so bad. I still have a lot in my lungs and i only have 3 more days of treatment left. My peak flows are still in the low 300s which is in the lower part of my yellow zone. Im beginning to wonder if this is gonna clear up by the end of the treatment or if im gonna have to go back to the doctor.

Whats weird is before I had the urge to cough but now I dont but when I do u can hear it all in my lungs. The only time I cough now is after laughing or fast pace activities.

Well its back to the doctor tomorrow. I still have congestion in my chest and coughing quite a bit with periods of shortness of breath. My antibiotics helped a lil but still coughing up phlem.

At the end of this year you will no longer be able to get the inhalers you have gotton used to as they contaminate the air.There will be new ones but will be more expensive in 2009........

Actually, the only thing that will become unavailable is generic or CFC albuterol canisters.  If you already have un-generic albuterol with HFA canisters, like Ventolin, ProAir or Proventil, you don't need to worry about changing inhalers.  Xopenex is also not being discontinued.

The price wasn't that bad, mine was $10 for the generic and went to $25 when I switched to Proventil.  When the year changed to 2008, my insurance was only charging me $15 for the Proventil since they know generic albuterol will not be available anymore.  The price difference between albuterols may not be very much if your insurance company isn't really stupid or evil.

Mia, how is your cough?  I hope they gave you something that is helping more. 

If it helps at all, I was coughing lots and it turned out to be acid reflux from the steroid inhaler (doesn't usually happen, you have to be sensitive to it) and after about a week of prilosec made it stop.  I will have to take the prilosec as long as I have to take steroid inhalers, but at least I don't cough all the time!

My cough is better now that we got the bronchitis taken care of. I cough from time to time now but its b/c the infection has caused an asthma exacerbation and I have a lot of mucus in my lungs right now. But its about 75% better than last week.
