Constant shortness of breath please help!!!

   It all started in December, about two weeks after I got a cat.  I went to the doctor, I had bronchitis.  for 4 months now, I have had a constant feeling of difficulty breathing, even just sitting on the couch.  I went to another doctor, and he says he ASSUMES its asthma... the inhaler used to work, but now it doesnt.  I'm really afraid its something worse like emphysema.  I'm a healthy 23 year old male, smoked cigarettes off and on for 10 years.  thanks for listening!

If it started after you got the cat,give it another home.I'm allegic to cats & have 2 but they stay outside..........

but can a cat really be the reason for constant shortness of breath, even when I'm not around it for a couple of hours??

can it be emphysema if the ONLY symptom is constant shortness of breath?

Have your Dr get you tested for allergies or emphesema......

It can be a variety of reasons as to why you are getting short of breath. Only an allergist, a pulmonologist or your family doctor can be sure exactly what is causing it. It could be the cat set it off (whatever it is) and you are not rebounding like you should which in turn can cause outside allergens to aggravate it more.

Franck-- Go to your doctor and tell him you are still feeling short of breath. Ask him to refer you to a pulmonologist AND a allergist.

Why?

You can have a medical problem such as asthma. I, however, doubt with my small medical training that it is emphasema. Or you can have allergies, such as cats. If you dont want to get rid of the cat before you know...Thats cool. But that is why you go to the allergist and get tested for allergies....to see what you are allergic to.

I also want you to tip your head back as far as it can go hold that pose for 10 seconds and slowly release. Do this for a few times. Odd? Yea, but it actually helps open your lungs up.

As for your bronchitis, sometimes it can take a few months to get out of your system. I have had bronchitis for almost 2 months now.

You can also breath in hot vapor (like ya shower) to help open the airway and relax the muscles. Sometimes, NOT EVERYONE, can suck on ice and use the inhaler. Ask a doctor first. It could trigger an asthmatic, or help an asthmatic.

And can you all do me a favor? Stop acting like my kids, I get enuf of that here at home LOLOL

SmurfyShadow - explain yourself. In what way do you think they are acting like kids? To me, I see a simple exchange of information. Granted a bit slow of an exchange but Snowy is not one of many words to begin with due to a couple health conditions.

Hi there, I suddenly became allergic to my cats and dogs after having them since a child until I was 40+....shortness of breathe and late onset asthma.My doctor did allergy tests and I was allergic to all animal hair and some foods.I did not get rid of my animals as they were all very old and like my other children but I suffered badly from having them around me.When they all passed on I had no more but continued with asthma, sinusitus because the dander and hairs were still in my home.I had all carpets steam cleaned and changed the mattress and pillows etc.My asthma flares up at times but is under control and I know I must not have another hairy pet...so sad but I do love to breathe!!Just out of interest has franck been stung or bitten by any insect recently.My allergy flared up after a hornet sting that I had a very bad allergic reaction ....I had anaphalactic shock and was then diagnosed with the asthma.My pulmonary consultant said that the venom from the sting had awakened the asthma that was dorment in my system.My 3 sisters all had suffered with asthma ...but I never had ...so I do believe it was dorment in my system....perhap franck s cats have awaken her asthma....just a suggestion but I hope everyone feels asthma free...luv grooveyxx

Red, what I saw was advice yes. The child behavior I saw was saying to get rid of the cat over and over. He did say that he didnt have relief outside of the home to...there of I can be certain that he needs a medical diagnoses and tests. There can be many triggers. Anyone can devolope a new allergy...even if they were not allergic to it before at anytime. We do not know per se it was the cat. Like groovey said...the cat could of just awakened the immune system. A person with a cat allergy should get some releif outside the home as well...but there can be some factors like how much they are outside of the home. I didnt work in a nursing home for 3 years then in a adult day care (for severely disabled) another 3 years for nothing....Not to mention why I quit working was due to medical problems myself. Snowy, you hang in there and keep keeping your chin up. I know how it is having bad health, and God won't put you through what you cant handle.
