Increased hunger and weight gain on Symbicort?

Hey everyone. So I was on Advair for awhile but it increasing my hunger and made me eat way too much and gain weight, so my doctor has switched me over to Symbicort. So the questions are the same. Has anyone tried this? Good/bad results?

I'm relieved to know that my thinking that the Advair was the reason I am constantly hunger is real. I was just thinking today about asking for something to replace it because I can't keep pigging out like this. My stomach grumbles and hurts all the time like I haven't eaten in weeks.

Sarah, I take symbicort. I have been on it almost a year. It does not increase my appetite.  But everyone is different.  If you have a prescription from your dr. try it.  The thing I like about this med is that it controls my asthma. But like I said your drs orders are what you should follow.

I've been on Advair for 5 years now. However, I've never felt any bad side effects from it. I've always been hungry for 20 plus years now so I can't blame the Advair...... Wish I could (sigh). I just have to blame 41 years of bad food choices for me.

My asthma specialist at the university lung center changed me from advair to symbicort. He just thought that the spray would get deeper into my lungs than the advair powder. He did not think one was better than the other. He just thought that I did not inhale the advair properly.
I do much better with the symbicort but maybe my improper inhalation of the advair did not give it a fair chance.

I use symbicort and have very good results with it.  Do you use a spacer?  Using a spacer gets the med deeper into your lungs instead of staying in your throat or back of tongue. I also have pulmicort which is an inhaled powder and I never feel like I am truly inhaling it deeply.  I am glad the symbicort works for you. It has been a lifesaver for me.

No, I never used a spacer with the advair. I'm sure that would have helped out a lot. However, I'm doing well with the symbicort so I'll remain on it. I just never got the procedure down right with the disc. (I don't dance well either. Coordination is not one of my strong points!)
On the increase in appetite issue with advair, well, I'm a big guy and have always enjoyed my food so I can't blame it on the advair.

Hi All,
Have been using Symbicort inhaler for 3 years now and found it to be a great preventer.No problems with incresed appetite but then I love food anyway so eat when I feel hungry...not when its meal times and I have found I keep my weight under control ....no weight incresae at all...breathe easy...groovey

hi all,

I used to use advair. I was still uncontrolled on it so my doc switched me to symbicort. I use an Aerochamber (spacer) with my symbicort inhaler. The change was dramatic. I sometimes think I don't even have asthma. I inhale and hold it in 5 secs and exhale. I do it everytime. It takes getting used to. Once you get it its worth the effort. My asthma was terrible. I strongly recommend using a good spacer like the aerochamber. Good Luck

I also use a spacer with my symbicort and my dr. says it gets more med into your lungs directly.  He also told me to wait 5 min in between each puff. The reason for this is the 1st puff gets a chance to start to open your lungs. Then when you are more open use the 2nd puff and you will have very free clear breathing.  This has worked great for me. In fact he told me to use all inhalations 5 min apart even my rescue inhaler and this has really helped a lot. Also, remember to rinse your mouth out with water after using any inhaler so you don't get thrush or sores in your mouth.
