How to support my husband with emphysema?

This is my first day first ever chat forum. My husband was diagnosed with emphysema in his late 20s. He is now 51. In his 20s the drs kept telling us he was to young for emphysema that it had to be something else. We now find out that he has a gene present that was going to give him the disease whether he smoked or not. In answer to your question yes he smokes. He was doing very well for about a week and then started smoking again. And yes I smoke too very little but smoking is smoking right? We have found a pulmonary dr who we like very much. So my question is how can I support him? I will quite smoking in a heartbeat. I have found people are very unsympathetic because they think hes done this to himself by smoking. The fact is hes a father of 3 and a grandpa and a husband and he has a chronic health problem. I just want to do all I can to help him cope with this. any suggestions?signed oldhippiechick

I'm sorry that your husband is having a difficult time right now. Has he ever been checked for asthma? And yes, emphysema can strike in the early years. Has he been to see a pulmonologist?
