Bandaid allergic reactions

I am allergic to almost every type of bandaid. My skin blisters where the adhesive adhers to it. I could get around that but a new problem cropped up. I was in the ER due to a severe asthma attack and they of course started an IV. They used one of the clear adhesive rectangles to hold the IV needle in place. When they took it off I had a blistered area 2 x 3 inches. Paper tape does the same thing.

I had my second allergist/immunologist specialty appointment today. I was told that I am extremely allergic to one or more substances. All the common ones that they test for are not the culprits. She elected not to do skin testing because she doubts they will find the culprits. She also said this response is likely worse since I have been off Remicade and Humira for over a year.

Didn't really answer your question other than to commiserate. I can tolerate Bandaid brand flexible fabric bandaids. I don't blister with those. Also the cartoon type badages are the worse cause of blistering in me.

I'm allergic to them too, I break in rashes. I can do fabric bandaids. Also, the best for me is co-band (that colored stuff they use when you give blood). sometimes I evenmake a makeshift bandaid by using a papertowel or napkin and having it go all the way around then using medical tape to secure (but I make sure tape isnt touching me, thats why I use extra towel or gauze).

Smurfy, maybe use silk ribbon to keep the gauze tied on with, usually gauze is made with silk
not many people allergic to silk, so try the gauze and silk ribbon to keep it in place....

What is interesting is that I am NOT allergic to latex. So there is something else in the adhesives causing the problem IMHO. I also insist that they use the co-band after drawing blood. All the bandaids and tape they use in the local lab cause me problems.

Only certain plastics bug me, its probably more so a chemical allergic reaction in an ingredient that is common in all.

Here is a little tip in case you ever has surgery in the future. Ask the nurse for one of those body markers, write close by where the surgery is to be performed that you have a severe allergic reaction to adhesives. That way they will see this why you are under and hopefully not put anything on that can cause that reaction.

IDES. I stumbled upon this site for I was Googling "allergy to band aids". I recently had blood work done along with a flex sig. While getting the IV I noticed my arm starting to get red; that went away. However, both areas on my arm where I had band aids and medical tape are both red rash and resembles a sunburn. You made mention to being on Remicade. I also have Crohn's and currently on Pentassa and headed to Remicade treatment. Anyways, I thought it was coincidental that you have the skin allergy to the material used in the "tape" along with having Crohn's. Wonder if there's any relation in regards to sensitivity to skin and the meds? Mystery.

I have had problems in the past from Band Aid FlexibleFabric Bandages on several occasions. First time was a year or so ago. The problem was when I removed the bandaid from my big toe.  It took a bit of skin off, and that is a rough and calloused area.  Most recently was on my chest when I removed the bandaids it took skin off under the areas where the bandaid was adhered at the four corners - the area was very red and also after a couple of days I forgot about the area and was washing in the shower and the light friction of the cloth caused one area to actually bleed enough that I had to put Neosporin on a small gauze pad and secure it with my clothing. I wasn't about to use yet another bandaid after that bad experience.  The contact point all scabbed over and they are still very red and ugly looking even now that the scabs gradually went away on their own.   I called customer relations at Johnson and Johnson to report it to them.  Don't think I'll be using the Flexible Fabric Bandages any more!!!!  I am not on any med's.

Thank You for the information. This last year I have had a skin rash that my dermatologist has been treating. Earlier this week he did a small biopsy, stitched up the site and covered it with a bandaid. This is the first time that I have ever had a reaction to a bandage. I developed a red rash and blisters where the adhesive contacted my skin. The band-aid brand bandage that I used afterwards has not caused a reaction.

Hi! I have very sensitive skin but didn't start developing an allergy for band-aids until about 3 months ago. It usually takes about 2 days for the reaction to occur and what happens is I get a line of redness around the edges of where the band-aid was. After a few days it just looks like scratch. A couple of days ago I had a sore on my leg, and not thinking, I put a band-aid on top of it so I would remember not to shave there. Well, after a day or so the red line (and it's a bit bumpy) developed on the bottom edge of where the band-aid was. I immediately removed the band-aid after I discovered it. The next day another 2 sores appeared on my leg. Today they have grown to about 1 1/2" in diameter. They are about 2" from where the band-aid was on the top and the bottom. They are very sore and it actually hurts a little to walk. Is there something I could put on them, and do you think this was an allergic reaction to the band-aid? I read some of the other people's comments, and they mentioned blisters. These are not blisters, but more like sores. They sort of look like big bug bites.

I am allergic to the adhesive too. It must be a new thing for me because I don't remember having a problem when I was younger. Either that or they changed the adhesive and now I am allergic. I had a cut on my back and I put an bandaid on it, it started itching, next thing you know the part where the bandaid touched was worse than the cut! I still have a scar in the shape of a bandaid on my back. Very upsetting.

Hi all, I'm new to this site and joined after reading this discussion. My daughter and I both have reactions to the adhesive portion of the band-aid only - really any brand. We call it a band-aid tattoo and it lasts anywhere from a few days to a week or two, depending on how long we wear the band-aid. The skin heals almost as if healing from a minor burn. We both have a sensitivity to propylene glycol and relatives of this chemical. It's found in so many products - food items, lotions, ointments, and shampoos. And it is a major ingredient in adhesives. Propylene glycol is used in products to keep things liquid, moist, sticky including anti-freeze. Many years of research, process of elimination, and trial and error have led me to learn of my sensitivity to this! There is even a support website for this allergy/sensitivity. Who knew? My health has turned around almost 100% since I've been reading ingredients in products and avoiding PG. Arthritis pain, itching, nausea - just lots of symptoms have gone away!

I'm not saying this is the total reason I'm sensitive to band-aid adhesives - there's really nowhere to find a complete list of ingredients in band-aids - but I just know I have a sensitivity to propylene glycol. Anyone else have a propylene glycol sensitivity who breaks out from band-aid adhesives?
