I went for my checkup today and my pulmonologist put me back on albuterol and atrovent in nebulizer twice a day he says its because of the heat.I can't hear or feel the wheezing but he could this scares me because how am I going to know if its gone if I didn't hear it in the first place.

The extreme heat and dryness seem to be affecting me too, and I haven't even been diagnosed with asthma!

I don't tolerate albuterol, so I'm left with steroid sprays which don't work more than a couple of hours and are puffing me up. Maybe someone knows an alternative?

Because it's so dry here I have to wash my sinuses twice a day with a NeilMed squeeze bottle (suspect infection). Aerosol sprays only help between and at night when I get up not able to breathe.

Yes, I had a really bad week last week, had to go back on the Advair. If you live in an urban area, the hot temperatures usually also mean lower air quality, so it make sense.

Over the past few weeks, with the heat and humidity, I have been wheezing and having chest pain from congestion.  Have had to use neb with albuterol and pulmicort.  Was in hosp for 4 days last week for pneumonia and just finished antibiotics....  Never had this much congestion/wheezing before...  Think I have to call the doc again.......

I don't live in a pristine area but it is not metropolitan either. The heat and humidity have been awful for the northeast. We often have days below zero so it is hard for us to make the switch. Was in my bedroom with the fan going and the air going in the living room and hear the wheezing. My hearing is very good and I can hear my neck popping with arthritis also.

Am sorry you have been real sick and hospitalized and it is very hard to swing back especially with the weather being against you. I hope things improve.

Thanks Joan. Have appointments with rhemy, Gi, allergist, and LP coming up to help figure out what is going on. Think there must be an allergy issue or IGE since I have been getting hives for no reason. Also swelling in my throat/tongue and difficulty swallowing which I thought was Myasthenia symptoms. Starting to think it might be allergy related but negative for celiac so far. Know you can be antibody negative and still have reactions and since I have so many allergies to food and medications, really thinking some foods and env issues are at play here. Also have gotten better since I did 2 rounds of Diflucan which leads me to believe a fungal infection is at play...am severely allergic to aspergillis which is omnipresent esp in standing water like in a/c or even outside in grass mold. Ugh!!! Benadryl has been helping a bit but don't want to be walking around like a zombie all the time. Maybe some of the docs can finally get this thing licked....any thoughta about Lyme disease?

Alcie,

Perhaps Xoponex would be a better fit for you.  In order to open up the airways, a bronchodialater should be used.  Albuterol, while proven extremely effective for many people, does have some side effects that are worse for some people than others.  Xoponex acts as a very effective bronchodialater without some of the much dreaded side effects of albuterol.  It does not cause the increased heart rate and increased blood pressure.  As well as, it does not ususually cause you to feel anxious or jittery.  It is certainly worth talking with your doctor about if you are not getting relief from your current regimen.

I have been having an awful time with my asthma.  I cannot get off prednisone.  Each time I taper I end up in the hospital.  I am quite worried that at this point my body may have developed a tolerance due to the fact that I have been on such high doses of corticosteroids including oral, intravenous, and inhaled forms, as well as, albuterol nebs and inhalers for most of my life.  Anyone have any words of advice on what to try?  I would like to make it at least 10 more years and I am 32 now.

I went to the er last night,no pnemonia anyway but my chest still feels really heavy,tight.This might sound weird but I have a stethescope and my husband can't hear the wheezing but every time I get it checked out there is some.I am so scared that this is a allergic reaction to the zithromax I took my last one yesterday but it stays in your system for ten days.I am going to call the pulmonologist tomorrow just so afraid of having respiratory failure again.

Nana68, just wanted to let you know that there are a total of 22 places that a nurse or doctor listens to when they are listening (auscaltating) to your lungs. He may not have the stethescope placed correctly to hear the wheezes. In addition, the stethescope that he is using may not be positioned properly in his ears for him to hear some of the very quiet breath sounds that a professional is listening for. Many things can be making your chest feel heavy. You are smart to return to the doctor. Good luck and I wish you the best with your appointment!

suebug, thanks for posting about 22 places for auscultation of the lungs. As a nurse, it frustrates me to no end when a medical practitioner doesn't do a full field auscultation when there are lung/heart troubles. Any number of things can be missed including a pleural rub, heart murmurs, lower lung base or mid chest problems. A funny story with a new intern...during a hospital stay, he came in to listen to my lungs etc. He kept moving the stethescope around and looked very puzzled that he could not hear any GI sounds. I giggled and said, "that's not my abdomen!!" Because he was listening over my gown, he failed to notice that I did not have on a bra and what he was listening to was the fullest part of my droopy breast instead of a bulging stomach. I got a big kick out of that one but just goes to show you that you have to pay attention EVERY time you see a medical practitioner. If you are unsure or have a question about what they are doing, don't hesitate to point out your concerns and be specific. Thanks for the Xoponex post too...I have been having too much trouble with Albuterol and resp tx suggested it last hospitalization...will call doc tomorrow..

I had no idea they were supposed to be listening to 22 places! I've never had any doc listen to more than 8 for breathing + 3 for heart, and often just 4 total!

I'm afraid to even going to try xopenex unless I'm in a doc's office, since it's still (R)-albuterol. I had a very serious reaction that didn't respond to treatment for over 6 hours. I'm just putting up with the difficulty breathing for now. The side effects of steroids just aren't worth an hour of easier breathing. I see the ENT in a couple of days, will be asking for a culture of the green gunk I'm washing out of my sinuses.

Hello.  I just wanted to clarify.  I understand your hesitation to try a new medication.  However, Xoponex and Albuterol are not steroids.  They are bronchodialaters only.  Take care and best wishes.

i use allegra (otc now), benedryl was making me into a total drip.

i hear wheezing, buzzing in my ears and my neck popping...feel like i am very musical...hey maybe i could audition for an orchestra spot? (o i grind my teeth too, have a few left, hee, hee, hee).

hope it turns out ok for you, it is scary but maybe you can find the right mix. allegra (now an over the counter antihistamine) works great for me and does not leave me beat.
