Pulmicort for asthma

hi. my son was just given pulmicort by his doctor for his asthma. he has yet to start taking the med and i really don't know that much about it. i've talked to our doctor many times, but i'm still unsure about how he will react. he's only 6 (and our only child) and we've only known about the asthma for about 3 mos. has anyone had any personal experience with this med that might be able to help me out? should i be worried? or am i just being overprotective?

I am unable to answer your question as I'm just not familiar with this drug. Let me see after I research it a bit more, if I can find you more info then that site.



You are right to be concerned about any medication and to check it out first hand. Have you tried talking to a Pharmicist about this particular med.? Sometimes they can be you best avenue to check.



Try that first, and in the meantime, I'll see what I can find.

I did find some great information on this Pulmicort~Here's some info on it and I do hope it helps a bit.



When you are dealing with something as serious as asthma, you have to hope you can keep it under control. I wish you and your son all the best!!

thanks so much teri!  this def helps a bit, and i am feeling more comfortable with the medication every time my son takes it.  i have not spoken yet to our pharmacist specifically about the drug, but that is great advice, i'm not really sure why i didn't think of it before.  thanks again, and i'll be sure to keep you posted.

My 8 year-old takes Pulmicort for a few weeks any time he has the first signs of a cold, and throughout the worst of his pollen season (May and June at least). This is his 2nd or 3rd year on it. At first I didn't have him use it enough because I was worried about it's being a steroid, but eventually his allergist reassured me that the low dose is unlikely to cause any problems. The allergist said that Pulmicort provides great prevention by keeping the lungs in good shape, so my son is less likely to have asthma symptoms (and be less likely to need rescue med's). He used to do the respules, though he hated the mask and having to protect his eyes. Now he uses the inhaler, and though I'm not convinced that he's consistent at inhaling it very well, I like that he doesn't mind it and that it's quick. I still worry a little, but it seems much better than having symptoms!

It sounds like you have a good handle on this situation with your son and I'm glad to hear that at his age, he's taking it like a champ! That's wonderful and it shows that you've not turned this into too big of a deal-you rock, Mom!! tongue



I have two kids that are now 30 and almost 17 that both had tremendous allergy problems and had to use injections, nebulizers and rescue inhalors and steroids most of their lives. Today, my son is doing well, but still has allergies at different times of the year and my daughter just uses her nasal inhalor and takes her Zyrtec daily, like it's a part of her life. They both grew up understanding that it was important to take care of their health, but it didn't have to be the only big deal in their lives. My son played baseball and other sports and still enjoys softball, and my daughter participates in band and marching at all the football games, so it never held either of them back. I wish the same for your son!

Thank you so much for such a welcoming and encouraging response! tongue We've actually avoided the baseball, since May is my son's worst month of the year from the pollen, but he loves racquetball, so he can have a great sport without the pollen.

It's amazing that you have posted more than 1,900 times in less than 2 years. You must have brought lots of good cheer to these boards!

Actually, Jill, I'm happy you posted again and let me know that your son is okay and active in sports! Any type of activity is healthy for them and makes life a lot better for them!

Thanks. We've been having rain every day. While for most people that is not good news, for us it's great since the rain keeps washing the pollen out of the air. So, all is well!

For me it's a double-edged sword. My daughter and I are allergic to mold,(amongst some of our allergens) and if I understood my allergist correctly, he said that when it rains, it builds up the mold spores and when it doesn't rain, they're still present in the air anyway! eyes
