I have a wheat allergy (not the same, but somewhat relevant) and found that eating it occasionally doesn't do much more then exacerbate the symptoms. I was tested positive for my wheat allergy about 5 years ago when i was just a teenager, and I was okay eating it most of the time, just felt miserable. I was hoping it would get better in time and eventually my body would cope, but sadly it never did. In fact I actually developed allergies to milk, soy, and a few other various things in the last 2 years.
Again, an allergy isn't the same, but it's just food for thought. The best route to take is probably avoidance all together.
