Can asthma get worse?

hello again! Hayley is doing pretty good right now, but I just have a question about why she has become so severe so quickly. When she was first diagnosed about 3 yrs ago, they said her asthma was VERY mild. But in the past year she has been hospitalized twice, and it is just generally alot more severe. Has any one else gone from mild to severe or is this somewhat rare? I will be seeing a specialist in 3 weeks, but any help in the meantime would be great.

A person w/asthma is classified as intermittent or persistent. If the exacerbations occur only during certain times of the year, it is classified as intermittent. The exacerbations can be severe, but only occur periodically. Most of the time it is during the fall & spring (barometric pressure changes, pollen, etc).

How old is Hayley? Do you know her triggers? If the exacerbations occur during fall & spring & she's old enough to use a peak flow meter, you can control an asthma attack before it becomes severe. If the exacerbations occur during the fall & spring, it's probably due to pollen & she can be placed on a maintenance program of antihistamines & placed on routine tx during these times.

Hello, she could also be allergic to mold spores (outdoors) if its more worse in the fall. My son, has an allergy to Mold spores and has alot of trouble in late spring to fall. Asthma is chronic. Scary part for me is I don't always know if mine will be bad even when I am taking all my medications. I seem to get more severe with my asthma in late fall and in the winter time. Cold air is a big trigger for myself and for my son. We take our Albuterol inhalers 15 minutes before we go out in the cold. My son, has just developed an allergy to Dogs. I would try to identify your daughters triggers that helps out. Best Wishes! Brandi.

Yes but asthmas a scar on your lung ask her doctor if she can get a steroid inhaler that she takes dalie if dge does it just might reduce attacks and heal the scar to make it go away

Maybe she has allergic asthma? Has she been around more triggers like dust, animals, mold or cigarette smoke?

Also dairy products can aggravate asthma symptoms because they produce more phelgm.
