I have been suffering from hives for 7 months. The only thing that suppressed them was Prednisone, which has many side effects. Well, I am tapering off my second bout of Prednisone (at 15mg now). I also take Allegra, Zyzal, Doxepin 30mg, and Singulair. I still have hives!! about 2 weeks after getting off my first course of Prednisone the hives came back. Since being back on the Prednisone my hives never went away. Now that I am tapering the Prednisone, my hives are getting worse. I am NOT going back on prednisone. What else can I do? I am taking so many medications and the hives will not go away. I have been tested for allergies, lupus, celiac, etc. and everything was negative. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My allergist mentioned Plaquenil as a possible next step.

I am so sorry to read of your chronic hives and I cannot imagine how frustrated you must be.

Other medications are still being studied to determine whether they may be useful for treating chronic hives. Leukotriene receptor antagonists. Montelukast (Singulair) is the only medication of this type currently available in the United States. This type of medication may be helpful when used along with antihistamines. Reference: Mayo Clinic

I, too, have struggled with "hives" of unknown origin for the past few years.. but not to the same extent/severity as you. I've been on Prednisone, and it seems to have little effect on them. I do take Allegra.

I'm talking about little red, itchy dots that appear.. mostly on my legs, but sometimes my arms too. They are very stubborn, and they seem to SPREAD on my body. I would LOVE to know what is causing them. WHERE ARE THEY COMING FROM??

I put various hydrocortisone creams on them, in an effort to wipe them out.
I guess we need to just keep trying new remedies, and hopefully we'll stumble across something that works.

I have suffered Chronic Urticaria and Odema all day EVERY DAY for almost 3 years now. I have tried so many of the medications people talk about, have also had allergy testing, have cut out alcohol, chocolate, various other things etc etc and to no avail.  But finally I have some GOOD NEWS which I hope will help lots of sufferers of this horrible mystery illness.

My immunologist wanted me to try CICLOSPORIN (an immune suppressant) 2 years ago but I was reluctant to try it as I was worried about getting "hairy" lol. But I had suffered so much that I couldn't take it any more so I went to him in April and he informed me that he had SUCCESSFULLY treated many people with Chronic Urticaria and I started taking it.

It is now June and I haven't had any rash/welts/swelling/itching/burning/pain etc for about 8 weeks !!!! :)

It is amazing and I am so happy and I want to tell everyone who is suffering.

I've spend night after night after night on the computer trying to find myself a cure over the past few years and now I don't have to. But I wanted to help others.

Please bear in mind that the Ciclosporin can take about 6 weeks to get into your system. My immunologist put me on a "reducing dose" of steroids while we changed my medicines, and I came off the steroids very slowly but it worked and without suffering. I'm going back to see him next week and can't wait for him to see how happy I am as the last time I saw him I was in tears and covered in blood and scabs and now it's all gone!!

P.S. I haven't got hairy yet - the hairs on my arms are fair anyway, they do seem slightly fluffier but I think that's a small price to pay! Still don't know what actually caused this horrible problem in the first place, but right now ..... I don't even care any more I'm just happy to feel human again.

Hi everyone, I found after 4 years of self loving, hating myself, never having an intimate partner even though Im a good guy, Urticaria is ruining my life, I have lost so much spring in my step and it broke me, to the point I was on drugs, alcohol and depression, still it was bad, worse than ever... I spent hundreds of pounds of remedies, skin specialists and lotions, still nothing.. As the condition is blood cells, once you have it its almost there for life unless you change your life style.. ladies and gentlemen i am so happy that i have found the cure for hives believe it or not. My story on hives was the worst experience of my life and i want to help and promote everything i can so people can be cured. Im sure you have researched many sites and have found results telling you to take antihistamines or change ur diet but people dere is more to it When i was sufferin from hives i fought i was hopeless espicially when summer camethats when my hives got worse nd i was so emotional about it nd i was even scared. So i researched on the internet nd da first thing i found was antihistamines because it stops histamines from bbeing released so i went to the doctor to get an antihistamine called fexafodine but daht was no use. Den i came across a product called oxyhives and i fought all my prayers were awnsered but i realised dht oxyhives was no use because it did not help me in any after a month and a half using it. At this point i fought i had hives for life i cudnt play football because ill have breakouts nd i was always pouring water on my body to stop the inflamination and burning and i was so sad. i use to get welts on my skin nd it was very bad nd i was in need of help. As i was researchin more i found mr gary chronic utricara bbook which helped me overcome my hives.

I realised that because it was a nutrition condition i was suffering from i needed to insert a special sort of fluid dht was going to cure it.

to order apple cider vinegar which is organic i repeat organic it is very important that u remmeber that because if u dont get organic u will not get cured. The reason y i sey get organic is because it contains da mother whiich has several health components. When u ordder it put two tablespoons of apple cider in an 8 oz cup of puirified water not tap water or kettle just pure from bottles e.g. volvic evian. Never do ANYTHING without a doctor overseeing it. It is unhealthy, unsafe, can even put you in danger. You don't know for example the vinger may be a lethal combination with a medication you take. I urge you before you try anythign to ask the doctor.

Did you have your hives before the medications you started? If not, you may want to talk to your doctor about taperin goff all medications and see which one you may be allergice to.

yh its better to stop any medication ur taking bcoz medication is not going to help u it only tries to control outbreaks but it duzent cure hives but vinegar acc works after so many years of trying different medications.

Hi! I am SO upset... I suffered from CHRONIC IDIOPATHIC URTICARIA for over 3 years about TEN years ago... they came and they went without ever figuring out what caused them. At that time I saw numerous doctors, naturopaths & allergist. I was put on a mixture of medications to control them. IT WAS HORRIBLE to suffer through this, but i did it!
MUCH TO MY DISMAY... I woke with hives again about a month ago... here we go again! 10 years later?? With NONE in between?? Weird. Now I'm wracking my brain to remember the meds that worked... I know I took DOXEPIN, SINGULAIR, PEPCID, occasional PREDNIZONE when flare-ups were severe. I think I'm missing something but can't remember. Before calling my allergist I thought perhaps someone can help me with some OTC meds to take... I've used CLARITIN and BENEDRYL and still have hives each morning and evening.. they seem to be getting worse, not better! :( I picked up some ZYRTEC, PEPCID and more BENEDRYL today and will start the combo tomorrow. Ok guys... any ideas?
FYI, I am a 46 year old healthy female, don't drink, smoke or eat too much junk! I exercise daily and am in otherwise great health! I do have hoshimotos thyroid (take daily levoxyl) and reynauds syndrome... I swear there is somehow a connection!?!

For my hives or urticaria, green tea worked well when I drink as much as seven (7) cups of freshly made green tea. However, "Apple Cider Vinegar" produced miraculous effect. This is my story:

I suffered from severe URTICARIA for several months, almost a year. I have consulted doctors specializing on allergies. I have suffered mild urticaria since I was very young that does not last longer than 30 minutes. But the attacks I suffered for several months last for hours and happens everyday.
1. I was told it could have been triggered by almost anything like dust, molds, dander etc. but food is normally the cause. Unfortunately, anything I eat starts my hives especially at night. I limit my meals slowly to what I believe are not triggers until n the last 4 weeks I just eat rice, pork, beef & vegetable with only rock salt for seasoning. The attacks did not cease but continue everyday especially at dinner time. I was feeling desperate!
2. Two weeks ago, I tried drinking green tea together with my meal. It helped a little because the severity of the HIVES attack in the form of lumps & angio edema was lessened but the discomfort is still there.
3. I thought the green tea was the real remedy & the HIVES should disappear after sometime.
4. Upon further analysis of what’s happening within my body, I was convinced that my my hives was being cause by some problems in my stomach. Angio edema is traceable to “LEAKY GUT” & my bowel movement has become more frequent during the day & I am producing a lot of abdominal gas or dispepsia.
5. With said condition, I am convinced that I am not completely digesting my food intake & my doctor suggested I try a “proton pump inhibitor” medicines. It did help somewhat but I am not very happy with the result.
6. I learned that if I am not completely digesting my food, then I m not producing stomach acid of sufficient volume & strength. If that is the case, it follows that the bacteria in my gut are proliferating at a rate that’s not good for me, the balance is not in favor of beneficial bacteria.
7. With the information in my possession, I truly believe that I need to support my digestive system to be able to digest the food I eat & decrease the number of bacteria that are not beneficial in my gut.
8. I then started searching for the stomach aid that I need to take. That’s when I came across Apple Cider Vinegar as a remedy for acid reflux & indigestion. True enough it worked immediately and the relief is almost instant. Its like a miracle happening to my body.
9. Since a few days ago when I started taking Apple Cider diluted with tap water, my stomach gas (dyspepsia) diminished dramatically starting on the first day & completely disappeared. But more importantly, I have not had hives attack no matter what food I eat.

I have had Chronic Urticaria for about 15 months now and I still do not know what is the cause and how to stop them. Before I found Healing Well, I thought I was alone in the world with them. I'm only 19 years old with no health insurance so I'm loading my body with known antihistamines just to keep them at bay. I tried everything I could afford; cold showers (even in the winter), medicated powders and creams, no sugar or excessive salt, otc drugs and much more. At one point I gave up on trying to cure them and just tried to find ways to live with them. I was and still am self-conscious about my body because of the hives. I missed majority of my senior year of high school because my face, throat, hands, feet and body would be covered in massive hives and I would look like I was nearly beat to death. I wouldn't be able to walk or touch anything. I sometimes had a hard time breathing and eating because my mouth and throat would be swollen. I had been to the emergency room more times that I should at my age. Some days I couldn't see due to swollen eyes. I couldn't stay awake in class from being exhausted from medication and not sleeping well from flare ups. I would cry night after night wondering why this has happened. I wouldn't wear skirts or shorts in the spring and summer, afraid that my thighs rubbing together would cause a flare up. I stayed away from beaches, water parks and pools just so I didn't have to wear a bathing suit. I also stopped wearing regular bras for awhile because the band around my sides and back would cause a flare. I also was conscious about intercourse with my boyfriend because where the hives were the most severe, they left bruises and scratch marks from me digging into my skin when they'd itch.
Something was different about this year. I told myself enough is enough and I began my search, with the help of my wonderful boyfriend, to find a more natural antihistamines and/or cure. We have done research based on my family history, vitamins I am lacking, and things to improve my skin and immune system. So far I have found that Aspartame is a trigger for my hives. It is an artificial sugar that sugar-free foods and drinks use to replace real sugar. The FDA has failed to mention that aspartame doesn't do the body good but does harm. So I stopped chewing gum, and eating sugar free everything and even some healthy drinks and foods. I read the label on everything I buy. I also noticed that after I gained 60+ lbs that I started having this problem. No one in my family has ever had hives so I'm am very confident that it is a result of putting junk in my body.
I have discovered that I am low on vitamin D and cannot be in climates indoor or outdoor above 85 degrees Fahrenheit so I take multivitamins once a day and Vitamin D & antihistamines twice a day. I also try to use natural sugar, sea salt and Italian seasoning instead of white sugar and regular salt. I also am on a journey to lose 50 lbs and treat my body better. So far the changes I have made have really helped so I'm hoping getting healthy will cure my hives. I also am going to try apple cider vinegar and see what it can do for me. Another thing I have done to keep me motivated to be more healthy and hive conscious is visit Healing Well daily and read your forums and replies. I think I wouldn't have been this inspired if it hadn't been for you guys and gals sharing your stories and not giving up. You just don't know how much of a blessing you are from God and the universe. Your little words and smiley faces go a long way so thank you, thank you, thank you!!

For some reason Organic ACV did not seem to work for me and feel it actually made my hives worse. I only took it twice. One in the evening and then the next morning, I noticed that the hives did not lessen and seemed to worsen and be more swollen. I didnt take it last night and this am and my hives were very minimal... Weird..

My hives is being caused by deficiency in digestive acid production which results in incomplete digestion of food & growth of bacteria in the gut. In my case the Apple cider vinegar is effective; it helps my digestion & somewhat decrease the number of bacteria in the gut. When there is big number of bacteria in the gut, the body produces histamin to fight the invaders/threats. This situation leads to the leaking of histamine to the blood stream since the cell wall membrane will allow the histamine to go to the cells. this cause the weals & itch. If allergy results from other situation, Apple Cider Vinegar will not be the solution. Try to understand what is causing your body to release histamin. thats what you should address. ACV will only be helpful if the problem source is the gut. May you get well soon!

I have all these symptoms and am on ranitidine, doxepin, montelukast, nexium and dolera when I need it. I hate these symptoms. I'm glad I'm not alone -- not that I wish ill of anyone. But,

Does anyone know of a CURE for this? I'm tired of band-aids. I've had all of these symptoms for a year now and there's no end in sight. Does anyone know how to fix this condition???

I'd like to share my experience with Apple Cider Vinegar and Urticaria. It seems some folks do have allergic reactions to ACV as I learned later. about two months ago I started drinking a couple teaspoons of ACV each day for a week.At mid-week I started to noticed some bumps on my head but ignored it.By the end of the week my wife finally said I should stop the ACV.Well it seemed to be too late. Within days I was covered head to feet with typical urticaria wheals.Actually, I've had a 9 year managed battle with DPU(delayed pressure urticaria).However,it's been 6 years since I had a major outbreak of general Urticaria.That episode seemed to be triggered by lots of moving boxes into our new home. I just finished a 17 days course of Prednisone after which it got worse fast. Several days off Prednisone and I'm feeling better only some itching and taking 10mg Zyrtec and 1/2-180 Allegra.For the last nine years I try to be aware of the DPU.Mostly being aware od how I use my hands,feet,and where I sit only with my cushion.The DPU wheals usually pass in 24-36 hours. My situation is thankfully mild compared to many on the Chronic Urticaria forums. The only heads up I can offer is be wary of using Apple Cider Vinegar if you have Urticaria!! nono
