Testing strips for sulfites?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has found effective home testing for sulfites? I need it for vegetables and fruits mainly. I keep getting dosed - most recently from carrots. I know sulfites are supposedly banned on fresh fruits/veggies in the US, but a LOT of our produce comes from elsewhere and the laws are not the same.

I found a few laboratory sites that sell sulfite testing strips but they are all for liquids only.

I saw that very same piece of news on TV last night.  I knew we purchased a lot of produce from other countries but had no idea it was a much as the news stated.

It is a good thing the FDA is getting involved.

I don't have an answer for testing kits for you, sorry.

I recently bought some SO3 test strips from Amazon. 100 strips for 33$

I have only used them on my urine. If I am having a reaction, I dip the test strip in my
morning urine (most concentrated) and it has detected sulfites. As for using it on veggies,
you would have to soak the veggies maybe. Not sure how you could use the strips for veggies.

You should be fine if you buy as much American as possible and wash thoroughly or preferably peel vegetables.

You can look up how much sulfite is naturally or added to most foods from the tables at Rick's No Sulfite book.

I'm not holding my breath about importers getting rid of sulfites. I keep a good food journal and have calculated how much sulfite I tolerate.

My main sulfite avoidance strategy is to not buy any processed food that has a list of more than one inch of ingredients.
