Many people don't understand what it is like to have an illness/disease that brings you to the ER more than once or twice in your lifetime. Sometimes (I know!) it can really help to discuss this with others who totally know what you're talking about. Perhaps it will help you feel better to look at it in a different light. So if you've had a memorable visit to the ER, please share your story!
I, personally, will never forget the time I went to the ER with a bout of pneumonia. When the thermometer said my temp. was a little over 100*...I started to feel worse. Just before we let home, my temp. had been 104* -oral reading with mercury thermometer. It couldn't have been accurate. The nurse listened to my breathing and said she heard a little in my right lung...but not bad. I have asthma, so I have to be careful. Well, I didn't like the ER doctor the moment he walked in. He listened to my breathing and straightened up, looking at me he said, "You think you have pneumonia?" I replied, "Yes, I think I have pneumonia." He walked out with an air of "Here's another one of those who shouldn't have come to the ER..." That sure didn't make me feel great!
He ordered the x-rays anyway, and a few minutes he came rushing back in and announced that I did have pneumonia and it was quite extensive and I should be hospitalized right away. I was so surpised at his sudden change that I didn't answer right away. He started to go on about it, as if I needed convincing. Little did he know that I had already packed for a stay....for this sort of thing was nothing new for me. Then came a battle over which antibiotics to give. I don't know what the deal is, but all these ER doctors seem to want to use levaquin - something I don't want. My doctor is sure to prescibe a round of prednisone because of my asthma and that levaquin has some serious side effects esp. more likely when taken with corticosteroids. He finally agreed that I could take the doxycycline that I usually get. I am extremely allergic to most antibiotics and certainly like to play it safe. Having a tube stuck down my throat so I can breath is NOT in the least bit apealing to me!!
Once that battle was won, I didn't see that ER doctor again...
