Newly surprisingly diagnosed with Asthma (coughing)

I think we all face deial at some point with a new illness.
You can get a second opinion and I would recommend you find an asthma/allergy doctor make an appointment and go from there.
I know many on here that get relief with advair, but advair did not work good for me, so advair might not be a good medication for you.
Make sure your drinking plenty of water and get Vitamin C, if it's a cold like you think Vitamin C should help.
But Go and see an Asthma/Allergy doctor for a second opinion.
If the cough is worse at night then elevate the head of your bed or get a few pillows so your not lying down flat, lying down flat can make asthma worse...
Keep us posted on how your doing...Others will come by with better advice so pay attention to them...

Did you get a rescue inhaler? You should be using this to control your symptoms.

Since we're heading into a weekend, I would suggest you call your DR today and ask for a pred burst. This will be a 5 day dose of oral steroids that should really reduce inflammation quickly and give you good relief.

Are you doing any sinus lavage? This may help with reducing your cough.

When you were diagnosed with asthma did they measure your blood oxygen levels? Did they give you a peak flow meter so you could evaluate your own condition?

Maybe this diagnosis is just relevant for your current viral issues and you will not struggle with asthma as a chronic condition. It is pretty common to have virally triggered asthma, but I think that's generally true only for people who have asthma. In other words, you probably should consider this a lifelong issue and get prepared for another round of wheezing and extensive coughing in future episodes of upper respiratory infections.

The trick to managing asthma is to actually manage it effectively. This means becoming aware of your lung function. You can do this by becoming familiar with peak flow measurements, and knowing what your normal is and when you need to start treating an oncoming asthma flare.

You really should have a rescue inhaler just in case.

You should also plan in future to always always always get a flu vaccine. You should probably also talk to your regular DR about vaccines for pneumococcol (http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/pneumo/default.htm).

So glad you'll be going to a specialist. Even when your on a medicine for GERD, it can still cause night time asthma, so do look into elevating your bed, you can get blocks at wal-mart or buy a few extra pillows.
I'm on a stomach med for gerd as well and I have my bed elevated and it has help so very much...give it a try, it could help...
