Sulfite Intolerance

Sorry for the delayed reply. I've been out of town and away from the computer.

I wasn't given any meds in the ER. Maybe because by the time the doc saw me, my heart rate was about 120 bpm. I'll ask about the inderal. When I was on my recent trip, and eating in restuarants, though I tried to be careful, I had several minor tachy episodes, so I chewed an aspirin as you suggested, and also a B12 vitamin, which I think was suggested on the other thread. The episodes only lasted about 20 minutes or so, so I think the aspirin and B12 helped - thanks!

I'm definately avoiding frozen pizza and Chinese food. Problem is, I can't eat a lot of wheat, but I'll experiment with making homemade gluten-free pizza dough.

What kind of grape juice do you use for the wine you make? You mentioned a six gallon plastic container of good grape juice. I suppose Costco might have this. Do you also use a tube to put the wine into the containers when bottling it, to avoid oxygenation?

It'd good to know that they don't worry too much about tach at 120, but rather at 145.

I was having increased episodes of tach late last week, but not more than 110 or so, even though I've mostly avoided sulfites. The doc put me on a medication called metoprolol last Friday, and it's much improved; hardly any tach this week. So maybe sulfites aren't the problem, but I'm not sure. I'm still avoiding sulfites, though, just in case.

Strangely enough I have a younger sister who has the same problem, only worse. She can hardly get off the couch, because her heartrate goes up. Her doctor thinks it an adrenal problem, though. She has a lot of the symptoms of Addison's Disease, and she'll have tests soon. Hopefully she doesn't have Addisons. Tachycardia seems to be a symptom of several ailments or conditions.

Just wondering if you guys looked into methylation supplements and/or removing vaccines/viruses? I have read that CBS/SUOX mutations can cause sulfite intolerance, and vaccines can cause certain gene mutations to be expressed.

My sulphite/sulphur sensitivity got a lot worse recently, but now that I finally have a doctor who knows what she's doing, this is the direction I am going in right now.

Yes, I eat beans of many types. What you add to them is usually the problem. If you are using canned beans look at the ingredients.

This is an old thread. Hopefully the NT will start a new one if more information is wanted.

The only testing for sulfites I know of is keeping a "food journal" and doing "challenge testing." There are loads of posts on these subjects - see the search box at the top of the page. Some people have reported allergists doing testing with one of the sulfites, but that sounds dangerous to me. After all, we're dealing in MICROgrams! The food journal will tell you what foods you don't tolerate!

I am not grain-free, but I avoid bread and other processed foods because they often contain "dough conditioners" and other sulfite-laden ingredients. I recently did a challenge test, in my allergist's office, with pita bread that had only wheat and some barley, and I reacted. So, now I'm limited to up to 1 slice of bread a week. It may be an allergy/sensitivity reaction caused by eating too much wheat over the years, and not related to sulfites. The pita did not have any additives (according to list of ingredients). People in Asian countries get allergic to rice.

I haven't been diagnosed with UC, but I have diverticulitis, often diverticulosis, have had several surgeries and currently have pain again.

Asthma and allergy symptoms can be triggered by sulfites if you are "truly" allergic. I am only "sensitive." But I get gastric and heart reactions to sulfites, so it's nothing to sneeze at. My allergist lumps sensitivity and allergy in one basket. She says they're all allergic reactions.

Does anybody know if Evian water contains hidden sulfites? I have many food intolerances and have trouble getting enough minerals in my diet. The calcium magnesium and bicarbonate in Evian would probably be of a big help to me. I have trouble eating vegetables and fruit and taking supplements. Potassium gluconate helps but it tears up my esophagus and stomach. I would be very happy to know about Evian and even other similar waters high in bicarbonate. I have read that some people get sulfite reactions to bottled water but i don't know if its sulfites or something else.

Hello! New to the forum. I also have the dreaded sulfite allergy :) I was poisoned by an antibiotic and was allergic ever since. I know this is an old thread but I wanted to inquire about something that was mentioned; rice vinegar. I'm assuming that's the same as rice wine vinegar? Is it true that this is safe for us? I know that sushi is made with rice wine vinegar and I avoid it like the plague. I'm lucky that some places will make with just regular steamed rice. I ask because when I have the rice wine vinegar I get the slight swelling of the throat and the post nasal drip like crazy, which is my usual reaction when I've had small amounts of sulfites. Oh how I miss seaweed salad :( Thanks all for the info!

The brand of rice vinegar I have has nothing about wine on the label. However, I don't know any of making vinegar but from fermenting something and turning the resulting alcohol to vinegar by adding an oxygen.

What else is in the sushi or whatever the rice wine vinegar is in? Sushi is often served with ginger or soy sauce, both of which have sulfite.

I can't eat Dannon yogurt either, but not sure if it's the lactose or the sulfite. I'm OK with a small amount of a few other brands. Pectin is supposed to be clean now. But yogurt with added thickeners just seems like cheating, and some thickeners are sulfited..

I'm not sure about nonfat yogurt. I only eat full fat or 2% fat, if I can't find the whole version, of Fage Greek yogurt to which I add a few oz of diced prunes for flavor. It doesn't seem to bother me. I know they make a 0% version too that looks pretty clean. This is still the plain kind I'm talking about. I looked at all their fruit ones and I wouldn't touch them though. Those have quite a few questionable ingredients.

I have had Pom wonderful in the past. Honestly, I can't remember if it bothered me or not. Sorry. :(

You can look up any food and sulfites. Yes, canned oysters commonly are sulfited. Most seafood is. Soups may also contain a lot of it. I have to avoid certain popular brands.

I am wondering if I have a sulfur sensitivity too. I don't have the symptoms most people are complaining of though. Been seeing a naturopath for 3 years and he did 23andme test. I have lots of gene mutations, one being CBS gene and COMT. Has anyone with these mutations ever been treated so they are no longer sulfur sensitive? I have bizzare symptoms, namely horrible pain in my feet and hands. Done tons of bloodwork and tests...all are negative. My naturopath doesn't think he can do much more for me, so I don't know where to go now. Any suggestions what kind of doctor I should see next given my genetic mutations.

Crazily enough sulfuric acid is used to control pH in bronchodialaters. Trace amounts of sulphur are potent bronchoconstrictors and respiratory irritants. Xopenex and Asthmanepherine do not contain sulfur compounds.
