allergic to my home? what could it be?

Hello all

I am hoping to get some advice.
I recently moved into a rental property 3 months ago and since then I have developed very bad congestion/runny nose/itchy nose so bad at times I can not swallow. I can not sleep at night property. I have done everything you can imagine and want to see if anyone can sugest anything else? I noticed that within a few mins of leaving the house my issues have gone and within a few mins being back in the house they return.

There is no visable mould anywhere!
I have an air purifier
open the windows as much as possible.
Bought a new matress and pillows all anti allergy

I have tried anti histamine tables and they just cause me to get more congested but stop the sneezing. Ive tried every over the counter thing available, the only thing that works is Vicks Decongestant and it worked AMAZING!!! but once it wore off it was worse than it was in the first place. Ive tired herbal tables, homeopathy everything you can think of...nasal rinse etc...

No one else in the house is having this issue but me.

I noticed that whenever theres even the slightest breeze in the house or I walk around in the house it irritates my nose and I start sneezing.

What else can I do to solve this problem? I dont know what else to try, any advice most appreicated.

Kind of sounds like dust, get air duct air filters and get someone to replace them for you. Also get the rugs professionally cleaned, this should help...
So get those air filters changed! You might need to replace them once a month VS the every 3 month rule....hope your feeling better soon!

WHat is an get air duct air filters? Can I just buy one? Is it like an air vent?

I have an air vent in the wall that looks like this

I noticed its a bit dirty, maybe it needs to be cleaned out? Although would it really need to be cleaned as its blowing in air from outside.

If it is just you getting sick I would try taking vitamin C. Vitamin C is one of the best things for detox of the body. I would start taking 3 grams a day and see if that makes a difference. 1 gram with each meal is best. It could help the body deal with whatever toxin you are exposed to. I was taking 5 grams a day when I was on my detox program.

Does this house have carpet? If so, there may be some allergens in the carpet from previos tenants. Having it professionally cleaned should help. Also, having your ducts cleaned might help as well.

Yes it does have carpets and I dont know why I didnt get the carpets cleaned before I moved in. I have a carpet shampooer cleaner which I could use.

1000 MG a day I am already taking of Vit C. So you think maybe increasing it to 3000 MG per day would help.

Something in the house is making me ill, I just dont know what. It has to be one of the follow:

1) Mould unseen ie in the loft/carpet or from the neighbour belows flat.
2) Central heating heat.
3) General House Dust

or a comination of the above.

I know that once out the house for 10 mins I feel great, the congestion dissapears and all the other symptoms. Then a few mins back in the flat its back again. I dont know what else to do, Im going to shampoo the carpets today, Ive done a mould check and will see the results Monday and gonna get the loft to look for Mould and see about maybe cleaning the air vent that goes into the living room.
There is also a old fireplace which charcoal inside of it that is not used which is at the bottom of a chimney in the living room. Could that be the cause of it?

The thing is that its the same in every room in the house. Could I buy something to cover the carpets with incase its the carpets that are making me ill?

It is hard to say how much vitamin C is necessary. For sure people who have problems(sick) need more than people who are well. After I followed a detox program I stopped taking vitamins and minerals because I believed I could get all I needed from my food since I ate very healthy(fruits and vegetables). I started having problems with my eyes itching. I couldn't understand why. I started taking vitamin C supplements again and the problem went away. Can't tell you how much is necessary. You will need to find that out by trial. Go to 3 grams and if that doesn't work you can start increasing the amount. If you experience diarrhea you have reach your level of tolerance and need to cut back to the previous amount. My belief is vitamin C is one of the best vitamins for detox.

dust is a very bad allergic problem...carpeting must be cleaned and talk to landlord about ducts. Hope you did not acquire a pet recently.

Thanks for the replies, there are many trees around my new property, could I be allergic to them or maybe the mould on them? even though its the middle of the winter right now.

Yes, you could be. I take it you are in England where there is no brutal winter like we have in the northeast US. Can you spare the time and money to have allergy testing? I had very severe allergic asthma and the shots helped me a lot but I had a GREAT doc. He was wonderful.

I am in Scotland, but I could try and get an allergy test done. I would like to get a Bio Resonance testing machine test but some people say its not reliable. So not sure. Yes apparently mould spores outside right now are very bad.

I would get the ducts cleaned. They have to be cleaned properly so that all debris is gone and not just moved around. I had the same thing happen to me at my own house. I didn’t have ducts cleaned routinely and cat hair and dust caused huge awful reaction. I only got better when they were cleaned. Also take the vent off yourself and make sure there is nothing right there that is making you so sick

try zyrtec. there has to be something in that house you are allergic to. It could be mold inside the walls. Never know. My sister lived in a house like that and whenever she would leave for awhile she got better but soon she go back into the house it would get worse. But others didn't have issues. good luck.

I have a furnace motor that has 2 speeds. It always runs on the slow speed which takes about the electricity of one hundred watt light bulb. There's the higher speed for heating or cooling. That may be something you can look into when you need a new motor. I also have a 4 1/2 inch filter box which has a high quality filter which is available from any hardware store. I hardly have to dust! It makes a huge difference in allergies. Furnace ducts can be converted to take the larger filters. Cheaper and better than buying room filters.

Allergy shots worked for years. Then I found that I needed something more. My allergy prescribed monteleucast (Singulair), which worked for a couple of years, but now I take meclizine, which does the same job for me.

Hi Blackcloud. Did you get the duct work cleaned out associated with your central air conditioner? It is very important to do that for mold. I am soooooo allergic to every mold and dust mites. Cleaning out my air conditioning ducts helped so much! Their are professionals who can do this. Also clean your rugs, laundry and all upholstery with anti mite products. It helps!
