Sublingual immunotherapy treatment?

My husband was horribly allergic and asthmatic as a child and has been using albuterol and other meds for years. Last fall he began having attacks that weren't helped by the albuterol and decided to be retested and try sublingual. For him, it's been a great experience. Here's an example--yesterday while mowing the lawn through a literal cloud of pollen (which would normally have sent him into a fit of itching, sneezing and wheezing), he was symptom free for the first time since I've known him--more than 20 years! He began the treatment last fall. Prior to that, he'd been taking advair, but since the black box warning came out, he was advised by his doctor to put that to a halt. His doctor prescribed drops along with an inhaler and singulair to get him through the rough times. He hasn't had to take either (just the drops) since late last year. Best of all, he can take it at home, it's painless and it's very affordable. For someone who was skeptical, he's absolutely sold and wishes he'd had this available years ago.

Well, yes and no.  The sublingual drops are essentially the same as the shots in that the antingen is slowly increased to slowly build up tolerance, however, the drops are placed under the tongue and affect the immune system through specialized cells found there (see the website link for specifics).  Many people who can't tolerate or don't respond from the shots are helped with the sublingual drops.  The intention is to use the drops daily for 3-5 years until they are no longer needed.

I personally know people who have been helped with the drops, and was recenly tested and started the drops myself.  I also know people on the shots who are helped only mildly with them, but they don't want to quit for fear their allergies will get worse.
