Predisone is the work of the devil. It didn't help and screwed me up! Just taking it for a week started 2 years of weight gain. After that, I took Doxepin. It helped but I gained 20 lbs on it. When I told my doctor about the weight gain he told me to exercise portion control. I quickly got another doctor.
He put me on Zyrtec now and it helps though it took a while to kick in. The weight gain stopped, but I didn't lose much. After a year of Zyrtec, the hives were okay but still there everyday so tried a homeopathic medical doctor. He found out I have food allergies (yeast mostly) and also put me on some herbs - anti candida stuff (candida is the bad intestinal bacteria that often gets out of control when yeast levels are haywire) and that has helped too. Also, between the anti-yeast diet (no bread, pasta, etc) and the herbs, I lost all the weight. I started at 170 ... was on route to being 250... and am now 170 - Thank God! The weight loss has been without working out - though I am more energetic - which is good b/c can't excercise in public b/c heat = hives on face.
I still can't workout or get in the sun. Which is a total bummer b/c I my only relaxation had been the pool/ beach. My goal is to be back on the beach next summer. I used to break out horribly when under ANY stress - even if I wasn't all that stressed out ... the rush would increase my body heat, I think. Fortunately, that part is pretty much under control. It really sucked being a trial attorney when I was covered head to toe in hives in front of a jury.
If anyone is in/ near Lawrence, Kansas, I can give you the name of my doctor who was the most thorough doctor I came across during the 3 hivey years before I found him.
Good luck - keep pushing for answers!
