Albuterol USP inhalers will be withdrawn form production by December 2008.  If you allergic to Sulfa, you will be out of luck.  All other rescue inhalers have sulfa except xopenex and serevent qnd atrovent.  Xopenex doesn't give the immediate relief you get from Albuterol USP and both serevent and atrovent can make the attack actually worse for some asthmatics. I for one, can't take either.  The reason for this recall is that the EPA feels that the propellant will harm the atmosphere. The tiny amount that may escape the small number of asthmatics out of a universe of 300 million Americans is hardly worth the paper the law is written on.  The danger to asthmatics may be great with deaths resulting.  When I spoke to the FDA spokeswoman and mentioned that asthmatics lives might be endangered, she replied that I should think of the environment which affects everybody.  If we want action, we must proptest by e-mailing EPA, FDA and asthma organizations and every chat room, forum or blog we can contact.  We have very little time!

Do you know if the Maxair Autohaler is sulfite free?

I don't know about Maxiair ( spelled right?)  If anyone does know if it contains a sulfa, please let me know.  My Dr.'s coouldn't suggest an alternative.  Is Maxiair a rescue inhaler or is it meant to prevent attacks and is not designed to be used fopr rescue.

Dear Razzle, If you feel your life is important and you are alergic to sulfites, write to your senators and representatives. I wrote to enator Spector and got a form letter telling me that health matters were very important ot him and that he would be involved in discussions of managed care and funding for biomedical research, all of which doesn't help me with the immediate withdrawal of Albuterol USP. Also, Albuterol USP is the generic version. Inother words, the cheaper version. The only other lbuterol preparation that will be left is Albuterol HFA which does contain a sulfa.

Peavea again. I looked at the molecule for Maxair and it doesn't have a sulfa. However, comments about its use mentions that it often misfires and is clumsy to use. The information also stated that maximum effect came 30 to 60 minutes after it was adminstered. I need the instant relief afforded by Albuterol USP! What has your experience been when you used Maxair? Waiting for your response.

Xopenex works pretty good for me as my rescue inhaler. Xopenex is also in nebulizer. I think it's crazy that the FDA would do that to Albuterol cause it's not going to have a huge impact on the environment as they think and the proventil HFA costs more money too.............

My Asthma seems to respond to the Maxair within about 10 minutes.  My Asthma is mild cough-variant, and my doctor seemed to think that the Maxair was adequate for me as a rescue inhaler.  Thanks for letting me know that the Maxair is free of sulfa.  <big sigh of relief>  I can't use Proventil because of heart rhythm abnormalities (premature heartbeat) that are aggravated by using Proventil.  Have you tried the over-the-counter Primatene Mist, or do you need something stronger than that when you get an Asthma attack?  There is a version of Primatene that's supposed to be sulfite-free.  Have you ever tried Vitamin B12 treatment for your sulfite sensitivity?

sulfite sensitivity is not curable.  The only suggested "cure" is to stay away from it and read all labels on food and drugs.  The FDA has signed in with the Montreal Protocol and the Geneva Convention which aims to eliminate all CFC's making no exception for medical uses.  Albuterol is the best inhaler to "rescue" an asthmatic with chest tightness or a full blown attack.  In order to fight the insanity of withdrawing it and leaving sulfa-sensitive asthmatics at risk you should squawk loudly to all internet outlets and write to your state politicians.  No one knows about us.  Many people think all Albuterol has sulfa.  It does not. Currently  we can still get Albuterol USP inhalers but our time is limited.  Protest now, in any ways you can before it really is too late!

Dear Razzle,

the Primatene inhaler I believe also uses CFC as a propellant.  It used to help me but no longer does.  An inhaler that takes ten minutes to peak would not help me. I would be gone way before ten minutes.  Sulfa sensitive asthmatics need Albuterol USP .  Why can't non-sulfa Albuterol be put up with an HFA propellant?  Why only with a sulfa???
