Ragweed allergies

I live in Atlanta Georgia. We have had an extremely dry summer and fall so far. about three weeks ago I started with sinus headaches that come and go..I feel stuffy at times and my ears bother me. I went to the doctor and he said that there was a sinus bug going around. He gave me a decongestant for my nose and a medication for me ears to dry out any fluid..

Well after about three days on medication I was feeling better. Last weekend I spent some time outdoors and the headaches started back.

I am wondering ( and probably should not self diagnose here) if I am suffering from ragweed allergies. I have some coworkers with same symptoms who have been diagnosed with this. Once swears by Nasonex and I am thinking of calling my doctor to see if he can prescribe that for me as well without another visit.

Any comments would be appreciated. I realize as you all do that these days we have to take an active part in our own treatment and health.

It's very possible that you have allergies. Before starting on Nasonex, have you ever tried otc allergy meds such as Sudafed or Clariten D?

No actually not tried either of those.  I have lived here for fourteen years and now in my mid forties seem to suffer with seasonal allergies this fall. I have never had problems in the fall before. I am not sure if it is due to fact that we have had a very dry summer and fall or the fact I am getting older...

I made an appointment and will talk to doctor tomorrow about this. The sinus pressure and ear aches are annoying...

nose a little clogged is not the problem because the decongestant he put me on is clearing those stuffed nasal passages..

Good luck at your doctors appt. tomorrow. Allergies, unfortunately, can strike anytime, anywhere with no previous sensitivities :(

Try a saline nasal spray it could help. Nasonex is a nasal steroid spray and it might not be good for you. Ask your doctor these questions and ask if you should be allergy tested, it's really not to bad to be allergy tested, just a little scary. good luck at the doctor and keep us posted. soft hugz to you.

Hi,

I suffer every year from ragweed allergies....but I found the best treatment and it helps me so much...I always start 2 weeks before ragweed season strikes...here in Texas,it satrts durind begining of september and lasts till mid november..so what I do is that I use flonase nose spray ( it is a steroid spray)and 1 claritin a day 2 weeks before and then I swear that I barely barely feel the allergy anymore......i suffered for years with allergies..and I had it bad....now I've been doing this for 3 years now and IT WORKS.But you have to start this treatment before ragweed season strikes.That was my ENT recommendations to me years ago but never followed them.....that was my mistake....but now I thank him so much....noe for you,it is too late to start the treatment....and the best antihistamine that would work for you are the ones like tylenol for severe allergies,you can take benadryl for night time..these antihistamines are strong,sedating but work real good....but the ones like claritin,zyrtec,allegra are not strong enough to eliminate allergies like ragweed...this is what I think....you better ask always your dr for advices...but I am telling you all that from my own experiences.....ALWAYS ASK YOUR DR FIRST !

I appreciate all the comments.

Interesting enough I spent the weekend in South Florida and did not feel much better. I do now if the same allergens are located in Florida but I was hoping that I would feel better so I would know for sure it was allergies.
ON the other hand ragweed is supposed to be in the Southeast and Florida is in the southeast so maybe I did not escape the allergies.

It is the sinus pressure and nightly headaches that bother me. Nose does not run and I am not sure if this is becuase of the decongestant I am taking or not.. I do have occassional sinus drip in my throat but not too bad.

Time for a visit to the allergist?

I suffer from bad allergies.  I've gone the very sick no med, meds (nasal spray, claritin) 365, antibiotics .. I since tried to get to the route cause of the allergies.  Acupuncture has been great for the twitching, headaches .. chinese herbs.  If your pocket can afford it .. try acupuncture (be sure to pick one that will find an herb formula for you).  The sessions really do make you feel very good ..
