Been suffering with allergic sinusitis and getting better. This has been diagnosed by my doctor about four weeks ago. Initially I got terrible sinus headaches and pressure almost daily. OTC remedies did not work. I have been on two different decongestants and three antibiotics.

My question is...

Headaches are gone as well as sinus pressure. However I have developed an ear ache in my left ear. I wake up fine and as the day progresses it gets worse. I am on a antibiotic and decongestant/antihistamine since Monday.

Heating pad does relieve pain as does ibuprophen. However since the headaches I am hesitant to take more ibuprophen for fears of hurting my stomach.

Does this sound like a normal residual from allergies/sinus? Should I be concerned?

Any input would be appreciated.

I think you need to see you doctor again about the ear problem.  This could or could not be related to your other problems.  Obviously, the antibiotics you have been taking haven't touched it.  It could also be built up wax, which would be easy for your doctor to take care of.  Are you a swimmer?  It could be swimmer's ear.  I think you had better schedule an appointment with your doctor, those ear problems can get extremely painful.

I used to get terrible sinus infections.Told my Dr "yer not getting it all,only 99%.He gave me a shot of rocephin followed up with 10 days of Cipro & I haven't had one since that was 6 or 7 yrs ago.......

Thanks. I was back this past Monday and he told me after looking in my ear that he did see liquid in the ear that was proving to be a problem. Started me a new antibiotic then. I have been to him four times cince these headaches started and frankly over it.

Ragweed season is almost over ( if indeed that was the cause of it) we have been getting rain and the pollen counts are very minimal these days here.

My gameplan is that after a week on this new medicine if not better probably going to see ENT.

I know what your feeling...I would have to say to quit the antibiotics...they can sometimes be more harmful than helpful...but I'm not a dr so check with him/her first. However I did take antibiotics for a sinus infection about 5 years ago and wound up I cant take them anymore...so be careful most sinus infection are viral hence the antibiotics are useless...I wanted to let you know also that I just had some extreme ear pain and her I found out that I am grinding my teeth and causing some serious swelling in there...perhaps think about stress levels...perhaps your grinding or clenching?????

I am under a lot of stress at work these days and thought about the grinding and clenching issue myself as the cause of this. If I am grinding my teeth it must be in my sleep because I am not aware of it during the day. Clenching is another matter.

Anyway what did your doctor do for this issue? Did you see an ENT?

I did go to the ENT but beings that I can not take antibiotics...I had to refuse them because my hearing test showed 4% loss of high tone which apparently is normal. And the xray showed no signs of infection. FYI: the next time you or anyone else that would read this info...if you think you have a infection ask about an xray to confirm it (lung, sinus, etc...). And if by chance the ENT think there are structural issues he/she should do a CT scan...again I am not a doc but at 33 I've been through hell and back and sometimes know more than some of the doctors that I have dealt with. Any hoot I went to the dentist, although it does not sound appealing I chose an NTI, a nighttime appliance. Please feel free to ask anything even if you want to know about why I cant take antibiotics...well perhaps I'll just tell you...Antibiotics dont always help "infection". They help bacterial infection, but not viral. Sometimes some but not all docs think that it is the cure all...I'm sure you have seen all the hype in the news lately about MRSA 'superbug'. well being overprescribed antibiotics gave me clostridium difficle, which is actually more deadly and the number of cases just in the US are 5Xs that of MRSA..
