Hi this is the first time I have posted on this board and I think I am starting off by asking a stupid question.  I have had asthma since I was a child an every time around this year it always gets worse.  My doctor put me on a new inhaler (Symbicort).  Does anyone else here use it?  My question is is there any possible way this inhaler could cause a sore throat?  Ever since I started taking it I have had a sore throat, also it makes me very jumpy.  Thanks for listening.

It's very Important to rinse your mouth after using any inhalers, try a salt water/warm water solution and gargle with that after using your inhaler. Or maybe you've been by someone who's ill? Having asthma weaken our immune systems....Hope this helps, sorry I do not use Symbicort. Nice to meet you, Hope you'll post again and keep us informed. This is just my advise okay............

From www.mysymbicort.com, "In clinical studies, common side effects included nose and throat irritation, headache, upper respiratory tract infection, sore throat, sinusitis, and stomach discomfort."

http://www.astrazeneca-us.com/pi/symbicort.pdf also says, "Sympathomimetic Effects. The cardiovascular and central nervous system effects seen with all sympathomimetic drugs (eg, increased blood pressure, heart rate, excitement) can occur after the use of formoterol, a component of SYMBICORT"

Hey thank you I have been using inhalers for years and know one has ever told me to rinse my mouth out before. You would think my doctor would have told me, eather my regulay doctor or my pluminary specialist! Now I'm not sure if my throat is infected or if it is from the inhaler. I am going back to see the doctor on Friday so I'll ask him.

Hey Star, it's Carla.  I've never had an inhaler cause me to have a sore throat.  I use Advair and you do need to rinse you mouth to prevent getting thrush.

Star, I rinse with Advair because it is a powder inhaler.  I've never been told to rinse after the others, but then I don't use the others that much, it's pretty much takes a nebulizer treatment to do help me.  Is your new inhaler a powder inhaler?  Just call the doctor's office and ask them, you have enough on your mind right now without taking on another worry.

Number 8. Rinse your mouth after using Symbicort.
This is in your instruction manual that comes with your medication and if you did not have one you need to do a google search on "How to use Symbicort"
Hope this helps you and Doctors do forget that piece of information sometimes.
Are the warm/Salt water gargle rinses helping your throat?
Let us know what your doctor says.

Hi

I'm on prednisone again, I hate that med.  He said he didn't know much about the new inhailor just that the drug company was pushing it saying it was better then the other ones.  That made me feel really good (ha ha).  He is just my family doctor my regular pulmonary doctor was in an accident  and isn't back to work yet so I am kind of stuck.  The new inhailor I got were samples so there wasn't any directions on them I have a perscription for it but it is $165 co-pay, can you believe that?  I don't know it I will get it filled the prednisone is really working well.  Hey thanks of asking this is a friendly place.  I am a little concered about my blood pressure it was up kind of high and it is never high I think I am going to stop using the Symbicort.  Hey gentle hugs to you too.

Forgive me for I am old, I can't remember if you have a nebulizer or not.  I just don't want you go get into trouble.  If you don't mind me asking, what dosage of Prednisone does he have you on?  If he has you on enough, you should be o.k.  Believe me, I know how you hate being on it.  

We all know what stress does to asthma, but you really can't help that right now.  You have just lost Glynis, your cousin, sister, best friend and substitute mother.  If you can try to keep from  the real hard crying, that would help because that can certainly put you into an asthma attack.  Your husband is home with you, isn't he?

How much do you want to bet that I am older than you? I am an old lady. Yes I have a nebulizer I use it when needed. Since this doctor doesn't exactly know what he is doing because he is just a G P he only has me on that 7 day pack of cortisone my Pulminary Specialist puts me on larger doeses and I gain weight and my stomach goes hay wire. I'm sure you know what I mean.

I had a screaming attack coming home from therapy today and then when I got home I went crazy crying yelling and stuff, but it did me good emotionally but you are right it did make my asthma worse. Yes my hubby is home he held me for a long time today when I was crying, he is very good too me. But it's kind of funny whezzing and crying at the same time sounds kind of weird. I get sick every November it's sort of a right of passage for me. I get bronchitis and my asthma acts up.

You're lucky if you only have to take that seven day pack. Of course, too much Prednisone  might mess with your depression right now any way. about age, I'm 56, can you beat that funny lady?

Are you saying that I am the old lady of the asthma board? Which would mean I am also the old lady of the fibro board and the depression board. Now now is that nice? Anyway my asthma is doing a lot better haven't had an attack in over a week. Hope it last. Thank you for asking.

Only possibly the old lady of the asthma board and I'm not too sure about that and who ever said being nice was fun any way.  I don't think you're the oldest on those other boards, so does that make you feel any better?  I am glad you're asthma is doing better.

starbrite...been taking symbicort for 3 years..and yes thrush in the throat is a side affect...gargle with luke warm water and eat some bread and butter after....works well keep of any yeast food such as marmite ...just aggrivates the symptons...good breathing...groovey

Marmite is a yeast-based sandwich spread. I've only seen it at a store that carried international foods. I think it is more common in the UK and Australia.

starbrite...marmite is a spread we have in uk we have it on toast and for making gravey its delicious but yeast based .yeast needs extra oxygen [which we asthmatics aint got] to process it.I love it but it dont love me.Got a tight chest, try eating fresh apricots or blueberries...full of antioxidants which flush out the system.Also try putting your head over a bowl of boiling water and dried eucalyptus leaves..clears everything but you may cough a bit as it clears the air ways...take care Groovey

No, I didn't, but it doesn't sound too good to me.  I like the idea of the berries better.  I guess I was reading Groovey's post below to you too fast, because I thought it said for you to stick your head in a bowl of boiling water.   tongue    I went back, read it again and got it right this time.  You know how it is being an old lady, my comprehension skills are going down hill.
