Inhalers for my son

Hello, I’m new to the forum, but I would like to ask your advice and see if I could get some answers on a couple questions.   I have a son (7 years old), who was diagnosed with asthma a year ago. The problem is that he keeps forgetting to take his medicine (inhalers) – which really worries me! Both the doctor and my husband and I have talked to him about it several times, but it doesn’t seem to stick with him for a long time.   I believe that if I could somehow turn the process of taking the medicine into something fun, it would be easier for him to remember it. Therefore, can anyone recommend any kind of electronic device or different/alternative inhalers that could turn taking the medicine into an interactive process?   I have seen the recent discussions on this forum regarding loosing inhalers and being unaware of the importance of taking the medicine, but do any of you have any other ideas or advice?   I was thinking of something like inhalers with built-in games or electronic inhalers that demanded some kind of interaction with the user?   Thank you so much   MarionG Post Edited (Margreen) : 11/11/2007 1:19:18 PM (GMT-7)

Marion,

First of all I want to welcome you to HealingWell.  I am sorry to say I don't have any suggestions for you.  I am 56 years old and have had asthma for five years.  Hopefully, someone will come along soon who be able to give you some suggestions.

Does your soon see an allergist?  If so, you might call their office and ask for ideas.  I am sure he is not the only seven year old with this problem.

Sorry, I don't have any idea to help. I agree with Carla that your son should be seeing a asthma/allergy doctor, if he's not seeing one already. I wish you good luck with finding something. There are children books with asthma you might look into that. Do a google search on Asthma books for kids. Hope that helps.

The only suggestion I can think of is maybe find a way to attach the inhaler to a lanyard that he wears around his neck and maybe clip a med reminder timer on the lanyard. The reminders can be found at some pharmacies or medical supply stores. Or even a watch with an alarm. In the meantime, keep drilling the importance of his medication into his head :)
