Have ALL new doctors now and I have never had such good care. If I can't get into a specialist, they call and I do get in right away. I should have changed doctors so long ago. I now have prednisone on hand for emergencies. My new doctor see me every week and spends 15 minutes just talking to me. This is the first time I can breath good in so long. Every time I went to the hospital, I was never wheezing because I couldn't breath enough to wheeze. The emergency room has one doctor who treats asthma like a cold or something. If he is there when I have to go again, I will ask for a different doctor. I got most of my old doctors at the hospital and think they just chase hospitalized patients for the big buck they get there. My insurance company is really good and pay all the bills right away and tell me to go anywhere I need to go so I am lucky there. I am on $3000 of meds a months now because the old doctors let medical conditions go untreated. Some of the conditions are not reversible. It is hard, but I am starting to stand up for myself and take a more active part in my treatment. I hope everybody here does too as it can mean the quality of your life or your life itself. This forum has helped me so much:)

well...you want to know the truth...another day, the veterans have the worse health care. You just need tons of money to fly all over the world. You need to be a VIP. The best health care system is in Bethesda, MD where the government big shots go. Some areas might be better than others. It is not real bad here as I live in a rural area now and the word on bad docs gets around quickly.

ceebee...I am so happy you are doing better with your health care.  I also feel fuzzy in the head with my breathing going down.  This happened quite a bit about twenty years ago when I was still working. One lady doctor in an asthma meeting really bounced on that.  But I know I have a high i.q. and I shot right back at her.  My allergist then told me to be very stingy on the drugs because more people land up in the hospital from that than they do from asthma.  He was very good and helped me with other health problems too.

I hate the way I hear that our veterans get treated medically.  They deserve the very best of care.  I hope you are doing well.

Are you taking any preventative meds like seretide ? this changed my life. i dronk lots of water a day too

I was going to start a post of my own about breathlessness but then i saw this thread.

As well as asthma i have some other autoimmune diseases but they're all under control.

My main problem is not being able to walk up hills or stairs without feeling breathless because i can't inhale enough air, and my legs feeling like lead weights, especially if i'm carrying heavy things like groceries. There is no way i can go fast and on a couple of occasions when i had to run to catch the train i felt like i was going to have a heart attack when i sat down. Then afterwards i was coughing up mucus and generally felt exhausted. All my inhaler does is make me cough even more and then i get shaky and light-headed.

I don't get chest pain but i can feel my heart thumping and it feels like i don't have enough oxygen to get to my hands and feet. I'm wondering if maybe i'm anemic or have heart problems. I hope not. I guess i should see my doctor soon but at this time of year it's hard to get an appointment. Does anyone know of anything besides caffeine that gives that extra boost i need? I can't have caffeine because of digestive problems.

I have severe asthma and have those same problems, not being able to walk up hills or steps without getting totally out of breath.  I really have to pace myself if I have to go up or down stairs, by stopping along the way or for instance if I'm going to an event in an old building that does not have an elevator (we have some on our local campus) and the building has a lot of steps leading up to the front door, I use my inhaler beforehand.  So, recently when I went to an event at this building, I used my inhaler before being dropped off in front of the building, walked half way up the steps, rested and then walked the rest of the way in.  After the performance, I did the same thing as we were leaving.  I also never leave home without taking my portable nebulizer that I can also use in the car.

If you don't mind me asking, what asthma medications are you on?

Hi Everyone

I can relate totally to being tired because I always feel tired especially when my asthma acts up.  I take advair, flovent, spriva daily and add ventalin(rescue inhaler) when needed.  I am also on prednisone 50mg right now because I have a cold which has made my asthma worse.

When my so-called "viral-induced" asthma flares up, my chest gets so tight that I feel like I am sucking air through a straw. I get so tired, I could cry. mad

At the moment, I am going through an episode, but I am not actually sick, with no cold symptoms, other than a lot of fluid in my ears and significantly reduced hearing. I am on Advair Diskus 500 mcg twice a day and Singular 10 mg at night for long-term treatment. I try to avoid Ventolin as much as I can, as I hate the way it makes me feel shakey and just plain miserable. So, now, I have broken down and started on the Ventolin regimen 2 puffs 4 times a day in the hopes of improving things.

Twice in the past I have had to go on oral prednisone to get back on track.

I do suffer from sleep apnea and have been on CPAP for a few years now. I also had an ulcer in the past and suffer from reflux, but I am on Prevacid for this.

The real irony here is that I have not been diagnosed as a "true asthmatic" based on pulmonary function testing. Go figure. I don't get it.

The extreme fatigue is what really kills me though. Yesterday, I slept all day and couldn't work.

Does anybody else go through this? How do you cope?

Welcome to HealingWell.  Sometimes it takes awhile to get that diagnosis of asthma.  When we finally knew for sure that I had asthma was when I showed up in my allergist's office in the middle of a full-blown asthma attack.  She had been running tests for a few months just prior to that.

How long have you been dealing with your symptoms?  I also understand some of the medications making you shakey.  Is the one you are talking about an inhaler?  I was never able to use Albuterol in my nebulizer and have always used Xopenex.  They now make Xopenex in an inhaler and it works great for me, where none of the others did.  I don't get the shakes and I get instant results.  Please remember, I am not a medical professional, just another asthma patient/volunteer.  You may want to ask your doctor about a Xopenex inhaler.

I am currently going through the fatigue thing. In February I had a bad URI which aggravated my asthma and caused me all sorts of problems. Now 6 weeks later I have gotten past the URI but am still dealing with the after effects of the asthma exacerbations. Most mornings I start out feeling OK but I tire very easily. My stamina stinks. On bad days I just feel sore and beat up. I am still dealing with flare ups because I remain hyper sensitive for quite some time following a bad attack.

I don't know if it's the asthma, or all the meds or just getting old. I should know a bit more after my followup appt. in April. They are going to draw blood to check how I'm dealing with my newest med, Zyflo CR. While I may not know the exact cause for my fatigue just now, I do know that it's been a rough month and a half.

Oh well, tomorrow's another day.

i had all kinds of fatigue recently and so much mucous it was ridiculous...i was able to get my allergist to give me a dtp shot plus another shot and i'll get a booster shot next month. the mucous went away finally and i guess it was "another virus".

i worked in new york city in the printing trades and most of my co-workers and bosses were very understanding of my problem. was also involved in a serious industrial accident and that did not help my situation as far as my breathing. i had an excellent allergist there which was definitely a help.

let me stress that you must find a good allergist or pulmonary expert or a great general practitioner who does not belittle your problem and will really help you.

Yes Joan, newly diagnosed with Asthma, severe sore throat and fatigue.. I have mold exposure. What Can I do to help myself? The Dr's always say no it doesn't make you tired.. but it does. I have reflux also...

It is not fair. I live near Albany which is the capital of the state of New York. The medical people here are HORRIBLE. They just want to live the high life.

Believe it or not, my allergist in New York City (Manhattan) was EXCELLENT. He was from Puerto Rica. The whole thing is very random...I have a good podiatrist and physical therapist here.

I dumped primary care doctor, rehumatologist (how do you spell that?), orthopedic doctor because I was in pain for a full year and got no help. My ankle got busted in rehab after the total knee replacement. Had to go to the horrible rehab because they gave me the wrong drug for pain. It was the weekend (surgeon only worked on Thursday) and no doctors were around. Landed up in a mess.

Allergists here will not give me help on drug allergies. I wear the necklace (Medic alert out of Turbo, California) and that is all. AM TIRED OF THEM MAKING MONEY AND ME JUST SUFFERING.

Hi, I have asthma and so does my sonandyes it makes you very tired especially when you are flared up. Your lungs are working so hard to helpyou breath it wears your body down. I have actually been introduced to this new therapy called mag therapy and it actually helped during an asthma attack. Also, this water called pi mag can help with the acid reflux. I cant say 100% it would help you but it sure did do wonders for my asthma.

I have a lot of allergies and tend to do better in the winter. They say that asthma does not make you tired but it does. Unfortunately I also came down with the allergic skin problem.

I now take the allegra and use only dove soap plus i take the singulaire. I take the advair on the basis of when I need it. I no longer take the flonase. Luckily I am retired and can rest and drink plenty of liquids when I come down with the virus.

Not all asthmatics have allergies and not all allergic people have asthma BUT THERE IS DEFINITELY A LINK between the two as quite a few of the population who has asthma also has allergies.

Take care of yourselves, rest, eat well and drink a lot of liquids.

I don't know what I have but whatever it is makes it difficult to breathe and I am always tired. I had my sinuses checked and they were pretty clear but the doctor said this is all in line with allergies. The weird part is the wheezing and difficulty breathing when I exercise. They say it's exercise induced asthma possibly but the inhaler I have doesn't help. So very strange. I aam going to go back to trying to clear the nose to help ease the symptoms. I hope it helps with the fatigue but I assume it will not. I have to many problesm to deal with to try to find an answe for my fatigue. There is no doctor that can find the answer I am convinced. I've been to multiple specialists and a primary, not even a bit closer to an answer.

Sorry you're still feeling tired Joan. I hope we can find some answers some day.

Don't know what to say except GO TO THE LIBRARY and try to read up on this stuff. Sorry that doctors are not helping you "notsosicklygirl" but that is par for the course. Seems that things have to be on an emergency level to get help.

I'd like to comment on drinking coffee and asthma.  My allergist has told me

that caffeine can cause reflux, which can cause asthma with or without heartburn

symptoms!  So drinking coffee may bring on chest tightness, etc.  I have

a hard time staying away from the energy lift of coffee, but try to because

I wonder if it is contributing to my asthma symptoms, including paradoxically

my fatigue.

wierd...my allergist thought coffee was a good thing. it is a natural bronchodilator. but some think it is not good...so do what you think is best.

i'm just curious why do i feel mentally and physically exhausted after a asthma attack also i seem to have a hard time getting a job that i have plenty of experience but when i mention i have asthma they turn me down can they do that

I have asthma fatigue when I go through a long bout of coughing. Sometimes I need Prednisone to get better.
So, you should switch doctors.
