Hello,

I was recently diagnosed with Chronic Idopathic Angioedema.  I tried looking this up online but didn't have a lot of success.  Can anyone share some insight and what helps them.  I was put on Zyrtec 2x a day and not they are thinking of adding Zantac along with it.  My throat has swollen closed several times and I now carry an Epipen as well.  Any thoughts or insight would be most helpfull.

Welcome to HealingWell!

I looked it up just now and I did not find out a whole lot either.  I think you should go back and have your doctor explain this more to you.  A condition that can cause your throat to swell like that, I think, needs more explanation.  What would happen if it happened and you were without your epi pen?

Hello MI,

Sorry to hear you have to deal with this condition as well. In Dec. I was admitted 16 days straight due to Idiopathic Anaphylaxis, at first they thought it was just idiopathic angioedema. They also tried me on alot of the allergy medication and steroids. However the epipen was the only thing that would stop it right away. My allergist did try one other medication cyklokapron it may help with the angioedema. It however did not work for me, but I have not had another massive angioedema attack for a while. But always remember to carry your epipen and make sure everyone around you understands the severity of your condition and how to use the epipen.

Thanks for the input and well wishes.  I have several pens and I keep them all over the house as well as my purse and the car.  My friends and family are well versed in the procedure in using it and how serious it is.  My doctor said it was an automatic 911 call if I do use it.  The amazing thing to me is how fast the attacks come on, all day today I was fine now both feet are swollen and I can barley walk.  They hurt so bad I am not sure what i will do tomorow.  The strange thing now if not only are my feet swollen and really painful but the keep going numb.  I will mention the drug you suggested at my next appoitment because like you the over the counter stuff isn't working.  The benadryl just makes me sleepy.  Thanks again for your thoughts and well wishes.

MI,

I am so glad to hear about the epipens, and how you taught family and friends. One peice of advice..... the car is not the best place to keep an epipen. Especially if you have very hot and/or cold weather. The epinephrine is very temperature and light unstable. Also the twinject is also a very good autoinjector. However, you and your family/friends may feel a bit more comfortable with the epipen if you are still new at it. As for the feet, keep them elevated when they swell up, not to sure how much it will help, but it may help some!
